The verdict

Best for. Families and couples who want Lombok's calmest, most polished white sand swim, based at a north coast resort with island and mountain views.

Best spot. The long shallow shelf in late light, with the Gili Islands floating offshore and Rinjani rising behind the headland.

Know this. The prettiest sand fronts resorts and the tide draws the water far out, so it can feel like a hotel beach and a deep swim needs higher water.

The honest read

Sira is the most composed beach in Lombok, and I mean that as a visual judgement first. Where the south coast is all drama, cliffs, swell and wild colour, the north coast at Sira is calm and horizontal. A long ruled line of soft white sand, a shallow shelf of water that shades from clear to pale turquoise, the Gili Islands set low on the horizon and, on a clear morning, Mount Rinjani standing behind the headland. It is a beach built for stillness, and where it fronts the resorts it is groomed to a sheen, the sand raked, the loungers squared, the palms leaning just so. If you want the polished, postcard version of a tropical beach, this is where Lombok delivers it.

That polish is also the honest catch. Much of the prettiest sand sits in front of resorts such as The Sira and, on the neighbouring stretch of Medana Beach, The Oberoi, and while there is real public access along the shore, the scene is unmistakably upscale and can feel more like a hotel beach than a wild Lombok cove. The other thing the pictures rarely show is the tide. At low water the sea draws a long way out across the shelf, leaving a wide flat of damp sand that is lovely to walk but not to swim, so a proper deep swim wants higher water. Read those two things honestly and Sira still rewards. Just do not expect the untouched drama you find further south.

Used well, Sira is a place to slow right down. Come for the calm, the easy shallow water that suits families and unhurried swimmers, and above all the light, which at the end of the day spreads gold across the flat water and the islands and turns the whole north coast soft. Base yourself at a resort beach club for the day, walk the long shore at low tide toward the headland, and time your swim for the higher water. Pair Sira with a Gili Islands crossing from Bangsal close by, or with quiet Nipah down the coast. As the island's calmest, most refined swimming beach, with the best sea and mountain views to boot, Sira earns its place even if it trades wildness for grace.

The club layer

Clubs on this beach

Sira is a resort beach, so the daybeds and dining belong to the hotels along the sand rather than a standalone club. A day visit may be possible at a resort beach club, with day passes and any minimum spend to be confirmed.

Getting there and essentials

North coast, Lombok

Sira sits on the north coast near Tanjung, on the headland facing the Gili Islands, about an hour and a half from Lombok airport and close to Bangsal harbour. There is no useful public transport, so drive, take a taxi or arrange a resort transfer. The road runs behind the resorts, with access points to the public sand between them and parking near the beach.

Check the tide before you plan a swim, since the water draws far out at low water, and come early or late for the best light across the islands and Rinjani. Bring sun cover for the open sand between resorts. Pair Sira with a Gili Islands crossing from Bangsal and with the quiet seafood bay at Nipah down the coast for a full north coast day.

Common questions about Sira Beach

Where is Sira Beach in Lombok?

Sira Beach runs along the north coast of Lombok near Tanjung, on the headland that faces the Gili Islands across the water. It is about an hour and a half from the airport and close to Bangsal harbour, and the area is home to several beachfront resorts and a golf course.

Is Sira Beach good for swimming?

Yes, it is one of the calmest swimming beaches in Lombok. The water is shallow, clear and usually gentle, with a long sandy shelf that suits an easy paddle. There is no public lifeguard, conditions are typical and never guaranteed, and the tide pulls the water well out, so time a deeper swim for higher water.

Can you visit Sira Beach if you are not staying at a resort?

Yes, the beach itself is public, though the prettiest, most manicured stretches front resorts such as The Sira and, on neighbouring Medana Beach, The Oberoi. There is genuine public access along the sand, and a day visit to a resort beach club may be possible, with day passes and any minimum spend to be confirmed with the venue.

What are the views like from Sira Beach?

They are the best part. Looking out, the Gili Islands sit low on the horizon, and on a clear day Mount Rinjani rises behind the headland inland. The light at the end of the day across the calm water and the islands is the reason to linger, and it is what makes Sira so photogenic.

Is Sira Beach good for families?

Yes, the calm shallow water and soft white sand make Sira one of the more comfortable family beaches in Lombok, especially based at a resort with shade and facilities. There is no lifeguard, so watch children near the water and mind the tide, and treat conditions as typical rather than guaranteed.
