Sestri Levante is unusual and lucky, a town with two sandy bays on a single small headland, and knowing which to use is the whole trick to an easy family day. The long one, the Baia delle Favole, the Bay of Fairy Tales named for Hans Christian Andersen, faces the open sea and gives you what families actually need, a generous stretch of sand, bagni for shade, and room to spread out and let children play. The small one, the Baia del Silenzio, the Bay of Silence, is the famous photograph, a perfect curved cove of calm water below pastel houses, and it is genuinely lovely.
The honest advice is to base your day at the Favole. It is the roomier, more practical beach, with space to settle, free public sand alongside the bagni, and an easy flat walk back into town for a gelato or a toilet. The water is typically calm and the sand is soft, so paddling and digging are simple, and you are not fighting anyone for a few centimetres of towel space. With young children, room matters more than a postcard, and the Favole gives it.
The Baia del Silenzio is worth seeing, and its sheltered water is the calmest in town, but it is small and gets very crowded in summer, so it is a poor base for a full family day in peak season. The smart move is to visit it early in the morning or out of peak, enjoy the view and a paddle in that still water, then settle the bulk of your day at the Favole.
