Liguria is built for scenery first and strollers second, so choosing a beach with children here is mostly about access, sand and gentle water rather than glamour. The honest starting point is that many of the prettiest spots, especially in the Cinque Terre, are pebble or rock reached down steep paths and steps, which is hard work with a toddler on your hip. The good news is that the region also has a run of broad, genuinely sandy resort beaches, mostly along the western Riviera and around Sestri Levante, where a family can park or step off a train, hire an umbrella and find a toilet and a gelato close by.

Noli
A long sandy beach with calm shallows and a real medieval town right behind it, far easier and far less crowded than the Cinque Terre names. Gentle entry, room to spread out and proper facilities make it the quietly excellent family choice on this stretch.
Finale Ligure
A broad sandy resort beach with a gentle shelving entry, a long line of lidos and a train station a short walk from the sand. It is busy and built up rather than postcard pretty, but the ease and the lack of a parking gamble are exactly what families want.
Alassio
One of the longest sandy beaches in Liguria, a wide golden strand with row upon row of lidos and a shallow, gentle shelving that suits small children. Developed and busy in summer, but for sheer ease of a sandy family day on the western Riviera it is hard to beat.
Levanto
The gateway town just north of the Cinque Terre has the long, easy sandy beach the famous villages lack, with free and paid sections and a flat seafront promenade. A calm, roomy family base, and the obvious place to stay if you want sand near the five villages.
Varigotti
Soft pale sand and clear, sheltered water below a pretty Saracen village, one of the loveliest sandy beaches in the region. Wonderful for a family if you arrive early, since the catch is parking, which is very limited and fills fast in high summer.
Who it suits, who should skip
If your children are happy on sand and a gentle paddle, the western Riviera and Sestri Levante give you the easiest days in Liguria, with real sand, shallow water and a lido umbrella never far away. Sestri Levante and Noli are the calmest and most sheltered, Finale Ligure and Alassio the most serviced and simple, and Levanto the best base if you want sand within reach of the Cinque Terre. Pack water shoes anywhere with pebble or rock, bring your own shade for the free sand, and arrive in the morning, since the free stretches and the parking both fill early on hot days.
Who should skip what? The Cinque Terre villages everyone screenshots, Vernazza and Riomaggiore in particular, are beautiful but offer tiny pebble or rock swimming rather than a beach day, with crowds and steps that wear out small legs. Save those for the view and a quick dip, not a day with a bucket and spade. San Fruttuoso is a glorious adventure but reached only by boat or a long coastal walk, so treat it as a half day outing rather than an easy beach. If soft white sand and a gentle resort beach are the priority, you may be happier in Sardinia or Puglia, but for a sandy Riviera day the picks above work well.
