Krabi is a watersports destination, but it is worth being clear about which sports, because the Andaman here is mostly calm and that shapes everything. This is not a surf coast or a windsurf coast. It is a place of clear water, island reefs and towering limestone, so the real action is snorkelling off the islands, sea kayaking through the karsts and sea caves, and diving on the reefs out towards Phi Phi. Come expecting gentle, scenic water rather than swell, and Krabi delivers some of the most rewarding easy watersports in Thailand.

We have ranked the beaches below for what they actually offer the water active traveller. Access to trips and gear first, then the quality of the snorkelling, kayaking and diving you can reach from each, then how calm and beginner friendly the launch is. We have been honest about the catches, because the most convenient launch is a busy boat lane, the best reefs need a day boat, and the most famous bay of all is the one where you are least able to get in the water.

If you take one line from this page, take this one. Base yourself at Ao Nang for the trips and the gear, paddle at Railay among the cliffs, and book a calm dry season day for the island snorkelling where the visibility is at its best.

Access and gear first, then the snorkelling, kayaking and diving you reach.

01
Central

Ao Nang

The launch hub for almost everything on the water, with the widest choice of snorkel trips, dive day boats, kayak hire and island tours leaving from the sand. The beach itself is a busy boat lane rather than a swim, but as a base for organising watersports it is unmatched, with gear, operators and easy transport all in one place. Start here, then head out for the clear water.

02
Railay peninsula

Railay

The home of sea kayaking and deep water climbing, where you paddle among the limestone towers, into sea caves and around hidden lagoons on calm water. Kayak hire is easy on the beach and the scenery is the reward. It is also Thailand's most famous rock climbing spot, with deep water soloing off the cliffs for the experienced. Calm, scenic and active.

Day trip or stay

Phi Phi

The headline for diving and serious snorkelling, with the clearest water and the richest reefs in the area, reached on a day boat or an overnight stay. The dive sites suit beginners and certified divers alike, and the snorkelling off the quieter bays is excellent on a settled day. Choose a calm dry season window for the best visibility and the smoothest crossing.

Day trip

Poda Island

The easy snorkelling stop, a short longtail from Ao Nang to clear shallow water with fish around the famous chicken rock offshore. The gentle shallows suit beginners and confident young swimmers, which makes it the friendliest introduction to snorkelling in Krabi. There is a park fee and little shade, so go early, bring cover and a mask, and keep children in life jackets.

05
Railay peninsula

Phra Nang

A beautiful cove with snorkelling around its rocks and easy kayaking from the sand on a calm day, set beneath dramatic cliffs. It is busy by late morning, so come early for the clearest water and the room to swim. Bring your own mask and shade, watch the tide and the passing longtails, and treat the conditions as typical and never guaranteed before you get in.

The honest read

The honest read on Krabi watersports

The watersports letdown in Krabi is Maya Bay, which people expect to be a snorkelling paradise and which is now a managed sightseeing stop. Since it reopened it runs on timed entry to protect the recovering reef, swimming is restricted in parts and the bay is crowded, so you are unlikely to get a proper snorkel there at all. If clear water and fish are the goal, send your day boat to the Phi Phi dive and snorkel sites or the reefs off Bamboo Island, where you can actually get in. Maya Bay is a photo, not a swim.

The calm that makes Krabi gentle also sets the rules. Visibility for snorkelling and diving is best in the dry season from November to April, when the water is clearest and the crossings smoothest, while the green season from May to October can cloud the sea after rain and turn the Andaman choppy enough to cancel a trip. Mornings are calmest for kayaking before the afternoon breeze builds. Pick a settled day, start early, and the water rewards you, but do not bank on conditions, because they change hour to hour.

A practical note on safety, since this is the water active page. The trips are open boats, the stops can be busy with traffic, and there is rarely lifeguard cover once you are out among the islands. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed and we make no promises, so wear the life jacket provided, keep children close and in jackets in the water, carry water and sun cover, and let a qualified operator make the call on a marginal day. Treated sensibly, Krabi is a kind place to learn to snorkel and to paddle.

Where a beach club helps an active day

Browse Krabi beach clubs

A beach club or resort day pass pairs well with a watersports day because it solves the dry land half of it, with shade, showers, loungers and food to come back to after a morning on the water. The Ao Nang frontages are closest to the trips and the gear, while the calmer north coast resorts give a gentler base for families learning to snorkel. We do not invent minimum spends or amenities, so where a venue is unconfirmed we say so. Use our directory to see who is open and what they ask, then send one enquiry and let them come back to you.

Good questions

Before you go

What watersports is Krabi actually good for?

Krabi is a snorkelling, sea kayaking and diving destination rather than a surf or windsurf one, because the Andaman here is mostly calm and the action is island reefs and limestone coves rather than wind and waves. Ao Nang is the launch hub for snorkel and dive trips, Railay is the place for sea kayaking among the cliffs, and the Phi Phi reefs are the headline for diving. Set expectations around clear water and gentle paddling, not big swell.

Where is the best snorkelling in Krabi?

The clearest snorkelling sits offshore on the island day trips, with Poda Island and the reefs around Phi Phi giving the best visibility and easy shallow water for beginners and children. From the mainland, the cove at Phra Nang has fish around its rocks on a calm day. Visibility is best in the dry season from November to April, and conditions are typical and never guaranteed, so check locally and pick a calm day.

Is Maya Bay good for watersports?

Not really, despite its fame. Maya Bay runs on timed entry to protect the recovering reef, swimming is restricted in parts and the bay is crowded, so it is a sightseeing stop rather than a snorkelling one. For clear water and fish, point your trip at the Phi Phi dive and snorkel sites or the reefs off Bamboo Island instead, where you can actually get in the water.

Can you kayak in Krabi, and where?

Sea kayaking is one of the best things to do in Krabi, gliding among the limestone karsts, through sea caves and into hidden lagoons. Railay and the Ao Nang area are the main launch points, with mangrove and island routes for calm paddling. Go on a settled day, wear the life jacket provided, and treat the tide and weather as typical and never guaranteed, especially in the green season.

Are Krabi watersports suitable for children?

Many are, with care. The shallow snorkelling at Poda Island and the calm kayaking routes suit confident young swimmers, but the boats are open and the stops can be busy, so they suit older children over toddlers. Choose a calm dry season day, keep children in life jackets on the boat and in the water, bring sun cover and water, and never treat sea conditions as a promise of safety.
