Ao Nang is the beating heart of Krabi, the lively little beach town where almost every visitor lands and from which almost every boat departs. Strung along a seafront road on the mainland, it has the restaurants, the dive shops, the bars and the massage parlours, and at the eastern end the piers where the longtails gather to ferry you across to Railay and out to the islands. As a base it is unbeatable, easy, sociable and full of choice, and when the sun drops behind the karsts and the islands offshore, its sunsets are some of the loveliest on the whole coast.
The honest read is that Ao Nang is the means rather than the end, and we would be doing you a disservice to pretend otherwise. The beach is a perfectly pleasant long strip of golden sand, but a road runs close behind it, the swimming is busy with boat traffic, and it has none of the drama or seclusion of the beaches a short ride away. This is the least beautiful sand in an area blessed with some of the most beautiful in Thailand, and the mistake so many visitors make is settling onto it for the day when the postcard is fifteen minutes across the water. Use Ao Nang for what it is brilliant at, and do not ask it to be Railay.
So we treat Ao Nang as the perfect launch pad and the perfect evening. Sleep here, eat here, drink here, and let it be your lively, convenient home on the coast, then give your beach hours to the boats, the short hop to Railay and Phra Nang or the longer trips to the four islands and beyond. Time your evenings for the seafront at sunset, when the promenade and the beach clubs come alive and the sky does its work, and Ao Nang earns its place as the easiest, most enjoyable base in Krabi, just not the place you spend the whole day on the sand.
Ao Nang has the most polished beach clubs in Krabi, all built around the sunset. See our Krabi beach clubs directory for every venue and the booking note for each.
The slick headline club on the Ao Nang sand, with daybeds, cocktails and a nightly fire show around eight. It is the most polished sunset on the strip, so reserve a front position in the high season. The address to know for a golden hour with full service, right on the seafront.
A refined beachfront club with seating on the sand and a two floor indoor lounge, leaning to international dining and sunset cocktails. The grown up choice on Ao Nang for a polished evening for two, a notch calmer than the liveliest bars and made for a slow golden hour.
A relaxed, eco minded beach club and restaurant near Ao Nang serving cocktails, Thai food and wood fire pizza. Easygoing and good value for a long, unhurried afternoon by the sea, it is the laid back counterpoint to the slicker sunset clubs on the main strip.
Ao Nang is the most accessible beach in Krabi, about a thirty minute drive from Krabi airport and well served by taxis, minibuses and the local songthaew from Krabi town. The seafront road runs the length of the beach, so everything is walkable once you arrive, and the longtail piers for Railay and the island tours sit at the eastern end. This easy access is exactly why Ao Nang makes the best base on the coast, with the beautiful beaches a short boat ride rather than a long journey away.
Go in the dry season from November to April for the calmest sea and the most reliable boats, and aim to be on the seafront for the sunset. Bring water, reef safe sun cover and a little cash for the boats and the stalls, though Ao Nang has shops and pharmacies for anything you forget. Thailand asks for modest dress away from the beach and at temples, so cover up in town, swim within your depth and mind the boat traffic, and treat conditions here as typical and never guaranteed.
The Ao Nang seafront is the best sunset on the coast. Tell us your date and party and we will point you to the right club for two. No obligation, and we reply within 24 hours.
Yes, but for what it is rather than what the brochures imply. Ao Nang is the practical heart of Krabi, a lively beach town with the restaurants, the dive shops, the bars and the boats, and its sunsets over the islands are lovely. The beach itself is ordinary, with a road running close behind it, so use Ao Nang as your base and your evening, and take the short longtail to Railay and Phra Nang for the beautiful sand.
By longtail boat from Ao Nang beach, a short and scenic crossing of about fifteen minutes. The boats gather at the eastern end of the beach and usually leave once they have enough passengers, so there is rarely a long wait in the day. Agree the fare before you board, and plan your return before the boats thin out after dark, as Railay has no road and the last crossings can be early.
It is good for the romantic evening rather than the romantic beach day. The Ao Nang seafront comes into its own at sunset, when the sky lights up over the islands and the beach clubs and restaurants fill, and it is an easy, lively base for two. For the quiet, beautiful sand that couples picture, take the boat to Railay or up the coast to Tubkaak, and keep Ao Nang for the dinner and the drink.
The beach is open and free, with no gate fee, and you can swim in the calm season, though the water is busy with longtail boats near the shore so keep to the marked areas and within your depth. There is no assured lifeguard, the water can cloud after rain, and conditions are typical and never guaranteed, so swim with care and follow any local advice on the day.
Come in the dry season from November to April for the calmest sea, the clearest skies and the most reliable boats out to the islands, with January and February the standouts. The green season from May to October is cheaper and quieter but brings warm rain and rougher seas that can cancel the boat trips, so favour the mornings and keep plans flexible, and aim for the seafront at sunset whatever the month.
