The best party beaches in Koh Phangan

Where the night actually lands, and the wild bays you slip away to after.

The verdict

  • Best forTravellers here for the famous full moon night who want a quiet, wild island to recover on the rest of the time
  • Top pickHaad Rin Nok for the original Full Moon party, the one night the whole island is built around
  • One thing to knowThe party lives in the south at Haad Rin and Ban Tai only, so the wild north stays calm and empty by night

Koh Phangan carries one of the most famous parties on earth, and yet it is, at heart, a quiet island. That contradiction is the whole truth of the place. The noise is real but penned into a small southern corner, while the rest of the coast is jungle, reef and near empty sand where the loudest thing after dark is the surf. Come knowing that and you get the best of both. Pick the wrong base and you either miss the night entirely or never escape it.

We have ranked the beaches by where the night genuinely happens, from the legendary Haad Rin to the satellite scene at Ban Tai and the gentler beach bars of the west, and we have been honest about which of them is a poor swim by day. As a naturalist I will steer you to one big night and then north to the wild, because that is how this island rewards you.

The short version. Haad Rin owns the Full Moon party, Ban Tai carries the in between nights, Haad Yuan and the west hold the mellow end, and the moment the music stops you should be on a boat or a bike heading north to the calm.

Ranked for the night

The best party beaches

Matched to how loud a night you actually want.

01
South coast, the party beach

Haad Rin

The original and the only true party beach, two back to back bays at the southern tip. Haad Rin Nok hosts the Full Moon party and the line of beach bars behind it, crowded, worn and loud in the best and worst senses. For nature it is the most overrated swim on the island, so treat it as one big night and nothing more. The dates follow the moon and shift, so we mark them as to be confirmed.

02
South coast

Ban Tai

The satellite of the scene, a long quiet stretch between Thong Sala and Haad Rin that carries the in between nights, the jungle and half moon style events held back from the shore. The beach itself is shallow and weedy at low tide and the real appeal is the value and the easy reach of the south coast venues. Names, dates and any cover charge change often, so we mark them as to be confirmed.

03
East coast, boat access

Haad Yuan

A boat access cove over the headland from Haad Rin that keeps a small, alternative night of its own alongside the island long standing wellness retreats. It is a softer, barefoot kind of party, music on the sand under the trees rather than a stadium of speakers, and a green escape by day. Boats run in the calmer months only and venue details are to be confirmed.

04
West coast

Haad Yao

The mellow end of the night, the island best stretch of broad west coast sand with a handful of relaxed beach bars and a famous west facing sunset. There is no rave here, just a sundowner, easy music and a swim the next morning, which makes it the sensible base for travellers who want a touch of scene without the southern crush. Reliable when rough weather closes the boat beaches.

05
Northeast coast

Thong Nai Pan

Not a party at all, and that is exactly why it earns a place. The two northeast bays hold the clearest swimming water and the calmest village on the road accessible coast, the place to base if you want the option of a night down south but a silent, forested bay to come home to. The wise choice for the morning after, and the antidote to Haad Rin.

The honest read

The honest read on the night

The single thing to understand is that Koh Phangan is a wild island with one loud corner, not a party island. The Full Moon machine runs at Haad Rin, the in between nights gather at Ban Tai, and beyond that southern tip the coast turns to jungle, boat access coves and reef. Where you sleep decides your trip. Base at Haad Rin and you are in the thick of it, fun for a night and exhausting for a week. Base in the north and you can dip into the party on the right date and retreat to silence.

For the legend it is Haad Rin Nok, and you should go once, eyes open, because the swim and the sand are worn and ordinary and the magic is purely the crowd and the moon. For a softer, barefoot version, Haad Yuan over the headland keeps a smaller, gentler scene, and Haad Yao on the west gives you a sundowner and a clean morning swim. Venues, dates and any cover charge shift constantly here, so we never invent them and mark anything unconfirmed as to be confirmed.

The overrated assumption is that the whole island is a non stop party. It is the opposite. Tread lightly on the wild beaches, take your rubbish off the boat beaches, and time your full moon night by the lunar calendar rather than a fixed date. Conditions, boat schedules and event dates are seasonal and never guaranteed, so confirm them locally before you commit.

Beach clubs and the day to night

Browse Koh Phangan beach clubs

Koh Phangan keeps it simple, beach bars and a few day to sunset spots around Haad Rin, Ban Tai and the west coast rather than the polished pool clubs of the bigger islands. That low key character is the appeal for a naturalist, music on the sand under the stars instead of a velvet rope. We never invent a venue, a line up or a minimum spend, so unconfirmed details are marked to be confirmed. Browse the directory and send one enquiry to lock your date.

We pass your enquiry to the club so they can confirm availability and any minimum spend. Some bookings may earn us a commission at no cost to you. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

Good questions

Before you go

Where is the best party beach in Koh Phangan?

Haad Rin, at the southern tip. Its eastern bay, Haad Rin Nok, hosts the legendary Full Moon party and the run of beach bars that fuel it. Ban Tai on the south coast carries the satellite scene of jungle and half moon style nights between the big events. For nature over noise, both sit at the loud end of an otherwise quiet island, so plan one big night then head north.

When is the Full Moon party on Koh Phangan?

It runs roughly once a month on or near the full moon at Haad Rin Nok, with the exact dates set by the lunar calendar and shifted at times for festivals or holidays. We do not publish a fixed schedule because it moves, so we mark the current dates as to be confirmed and suggest checking close to your trip. Smaller half moon, black moon and jungle nights fill the gaps around it.

Is Koh Phangan only about the Full Moon party?

Not at all, and that is the honest surprise. The party is concentrated at Haad Rin and Ban Tai in the south, while the rest of the island is among the quietest, wildest coast in the Gulf. Bottle Beach, Thong Nai Pan and the boat access coves are nature first and calm by night. Many travellers come for one party and stay for the silence.

Where do I go the morning after the party?

North. Thong Nai Pan offers the clearest swimming water and a low key comfort to recover in, while Bottle Beach and Haad Yuan reward a longtail boat ride with near empty sand. The contrast is the whole point of the island. One loud night at Haad Rin, then days of quiet bays, forest and reef well away from the speakers.

Are there beach clubs in Koh Phangan?

Yes, mostly simple beach bars and a handful of day to sunset spots around Haad Rin, Ban Tai and the west coast rather than the polished resort clubs of larger islands. Names, opening status and any minimum spend change with the season, so we mark those as to be confirmed. Browse our directory and send one enquiry to confirm your date and the current line up.
