The verdict

  • Who it is for. Anyone who wants high summer weather with a little more room and a little better value than July and August, plus a few tropical options still on their best behaviour.
  • The pick. Sardinia and the Greek islands for the warming Mediterranean, Zanzibar for the start of its long dry season, and the French Riviera before the August rush.
  • The one thing to know. June is the sweet spot before the peak, with strong sun and warmer days but seas that are still building, so the water can feel fresh on the first swim of the trip.
The brief

Why these made the list

June is when the Mediterranean stops promising and starts delivering. The long days arrive, the sun turns dependable, and the sea, while not yet at its late summer warmth, is comfortable enough for proper swimming. Crucially, the worst of the crowds and the highest prices are still a few weeks away, which makes June one of the most rewarding months to be on a European beach.

We have ranked the destinations that genuinely shine in June on sun, sea and atmosphere, and kept the verdicts honest about the trade off. Alongside the Mediterranean favourites we have included the tropical and Indian Ocean options that are at or near their best this month, with clear notes on which coasts to favour and where the water is still warming up.

Sardinia

June is one of the loveliest months on Sardinia, with warm sunny days, clear turquoise water and beaches like La Pelosa not yet at peak congestion. Verdict: the most beautiful Mediterranean sand and sea of this list, ideal before the July and August surge, with the catch that the sea is still warming and the wind can pick up in the north. Go now for the colour without the crowds.

Mykonos

June is early season on Mykonos, with hot sun, warm water and the famous beach clubs of Platis Gialos and Paradise opening into full swing. Zanzibar

June marks the start of Zanzibar's cool dry season, with reliable sunshine, gentle breezes and the powder white sand of Nungwi and Kendwa at its finest. The north coast stays swimmable through the tidal cycle, so base yourself there for easy dips.

French Riviera

Come now and you get the glamour before the July yachts and crowds arrive.

Maldives

June falls in the Maldivian green season, with warm seas, lush light and lower prices, broken up by short tropical showers. Verdict: the best value the Maldives ever offers, with calm lagoons and good diving between the rains, as long as you accept that the weather is less guaranteed than in winter. Pick a resort with indoor comforts and treat the odd downpour as part of the deal.

Crete

June is superb on Crete, with hot sun, warm water and showpiece beaches like Elafonissi and Balos glowing before the deep summer crowds. Verdict: the most varied island beach month here, mixing wild sand with easy resorts, with the south coast warmest and the meltemi occasionally stirring the north. Rent a car to reach the best bays early in the day.

Ibiza

June sees Ibiza wake up properly, with hot days, clear water at coves like Cala Comte and the island's clubs and beach restaurants hitting their stride. Verdict: the liveliest June option for those who want sand by day and energy by night, calmer than the August peak but rising in price. Head to the quieter north coves for swimming and save the southwest for sunset.

Mallorca

June is a fine month on Mallorca, with warm water, dependable sun and the turquoise calas of the east and southeast looking their best. Verdict: the most family friendly Mediterranean pick this month, calm and easy with excellent value before peak, the only caveat being that the prettiest small coves fill quickly. Arrive early and the island still feels generous in June.

Amalfi Coast

June brings warm sun and a sea finally worth swimming in to the Amalfi Coast, with Positano and the little coves at their photogenic best. Verdict: the most scenic June beach trip in this guide, unbeatable for views and food, though the beaches are small, pebbly and pricey. Come for the setting and the boat days rather than acres of sand.

Costa del Sol

June delivers warm reliable sun on the Costa del Sol, with comfortable sea temperatures and the beaches of Marbella and Estepona busy but not yet packed. Verdict: the easiest mainland value pick this month, well served and laid back, with the usual built up stretches the main aesthetic trade off. Pick the cleaner beaches east of Marbella for the nicest sand.

How to read June, and where to be careful

June rewards travellers who want high summer conditions without the high summer chaos. Across the Mediterranean the sun is already dependable and the days are at their longest, yet the schools are mostly still in session, so the beaches, the roads and the prices are all gentler than they will be in a few weeks. If your dates are flexible, the back half of June often gives you the warmest sea of the month with the crowds still thin.

The one honest caveat in the Mediterranean is the water temperature. June seas are comfortable rather than balmy, having spent the spring warming up, so the first swim of the trip can feel brisk, especially in the north of Sardinia, Corsica and the Aegean where the meltemi wind can stir things up. By late June the shallows on the sheltered southern coasts are genuinely warm.

For tropical sun in June, the picture flips toward the Indian Ocean. Zanzibar is entering its glorious dry season and is the strongest tropical pick of the month, while the Maldives offers real value in its green season as long as you accept the odd passing shower. Treat all sea and weather conditions as typical for the month rather than guaranteed, and follow local flags and advice when you swim.

Questions, answered

Common questions

Is the sea warm enough to swim in June?

In most of the Mediterranean, yes, the sea is comfortable for swimming in June, though it is cooler than the late summer peak because it has only just finished warming up. The first swim can feel fresh, particularly in northern Sardinia, Corsica and the windier Aegean. In the tropics, Zanzibar and the Maldives have warm water all month.

Where is the best value beach trip in June?

The Costa del Sol and Mallorca offer strong mainland and island value before the July peak, while Zanzibar is excellent value for a tropical trip as its dry season begins. The Maldives is also at its cheapest in June during the green season, the trade off being a less guaranteed forecast. Booking before the schools break up keeps prices lower.

Is June too early for the Greek islands?

Not at all. June is one of the best months for Mykonos and Crete, with hot sun, warm water and the beach clubs open but the August crush still to come. The main thing to watch is the meltemi wind, which can pick up in the afternoons and ruffle the exposed northern beaches. Mornings are usually calmest for swimming.

Is June a good time for the Maldives?

June is the green season in the Maldives, which means warm seas, lush conditions and the lowest prices of the year, interrupted by short tropical showers. It is the best value the islands offer, and the diving and snorkelling can be excellent between the rains. If you want guaranteed sunshine, the winter months are more reliable.

Which June destination is best to avoid crowds?

Sardinia, Mallorca and the French Riviera all feel noticeably calmer in June than in peak August, with the prettiest beaches reachable early in the day before they fill. Zanzibar is also quiet as its season opens. Going in the first half of June, before the European school holidays, gives you the most space of all.
