Koh Lipe packs three very different beaches into one small island, and Sunrise on the east coast is the long, quieter counterpoint to the busy Pattaya Beach strip. It runs as a generous stretch of soft white sand facing the channel toward Koh Adang, and as the name promises it catches the first light of the day, when the water is glassy and the sand is nearly empty. In a place that can feel crowded at its centre, this is where Koh Lipe still stretches out and breathes.
The honest read is that Sunrise gives you space and calm in exchange for a little less of the postcard sheen. Pattaya Beach has the powder sand and the boat filled turquoise bay that fills the brochures, while Sunrise is longer, more natural and more workaday, with longtails on the sand and resorts spread along the back. The water is clear and usually gentle in the dry season, though the channel can move more than the sheltered west, so it is a touch livelier. For a morning swim, a long walk and a genuine sunrise, it is the pick of the island.
As a naturalist I would choose Sunrise over the busier beach almost every time, because it keeps more of the island wild edge. My day here starts before dawn with the sky coloring over Koh Adang and the beach to myself, then a calm swim while the water is still, and a slow walk the length of the sand as the first boats stir. Koh Lipe sits inside a national marine park, so the sea is remarkably clear, and Sunrise is where you feel that best, away from the crowd at the heart of the island.
Beach bars, not a club
Sunrise runs on relaxed beach bars and resort fronts rather than a formal daybed club, spread along a long, easy stretch of sand.
Sunrise Beach does not have a formal daybed and bottle service club, and it does not need one. Along its length sit resort fronts, beach bars and restaurants where you can take a lounger, a drink or a meal at an easy pace, with longtails on the sand and the channel in front of you. It is comfortable and low key rather than curated and exclusive.

The east coast of Koh Lipe
Sunrise Beach runs down the east side of Koh Lipe, a small island reached by ferry or speedboat from the mainland at Pak Bara or from nearby islands like Langkawi in season. Once on the island there are no cars, so you cross from the pier and Pattaya Beach on foot along the short Walking Street, or take a motorbike taxi, reaching Sunrise in a few minutes.
Plan around the season and the park, since Koh Lipe is a dry season island. Visit from about November to April for calm seas and full service, budget for the national marine park fee collected on arrival, and bring sun cover, water and cash. Come to Sunrise early for the first light and the calmest water, and enjoy the long walk before the day warms and the boats get busy.
