For a value minded traveller that combination is rare on this coast, where most beaches ask you to buy shade from a hotel.
What you should not expect is a scene. There are no beach clubs here, no cocktail decks and no polish, and the setup is plainly run by the army, so the food courts and toilets are functional rather than stylish. That is the trade, and it is a good one if you know it going in. On a weekday the beach can feel almost empty, which is the best time to come. At the weekend and on Thai holidays it fills with local families who have picnicked under these pines for years, and the mood turns cheerful and busy.
Play it the value way. Suan Son Pradipat Beach sits about 9 kilometres south of Hua Hin town, between the Khao Takiab and Khao Tao headlands. The simple way there is a taxi or rented car for the 15 to 20 minute run down the main coast road. There is no direct town bus to the gate, so a taxi, scooter or car is the practical choice, and you pass a military checkpoint at the entrance.
