The verdict

Best for. Walkers, sunset chasers and anyone after wild, open space and a horizon of sea on both sides.

Best spot. The far end of the sandbar, around half an hour out, where the crowd thins to almost nothing and the sea wraps around you.

Know this. The cape has no shade and no bars, so the exclusivity is the walk, not a sunbed. Bring your own shade, or stay on the village beach for service.

The honest read

Possidi is the most unusual beach on Kassandra, and the reason is geography rather than fashion. From the western coast of the peninsula a long cape of pale sand reaches out into the sea, a natural spit that runs for the best part of a kilometre with water on both sides. Walk out along it and the effect is strange and lovely, a thin band of almost white sand laid across the turquoise, one flank often glassy and calm while the other ruffles in the breeze. At its root sits a small lighthouse from 1864, still in use, a quiet landmark with a little garden beside it.

What makes Possidi special is the space and the silence, and both are earned on foot. The crowd, such as it is, gathers near the base of the cape, and the further you walk towards the tip the fewer people you meet, until at the end you have the sandbar and the surrounding sea more or less to yourself. This is the real luxury here, and it costs nothing but a half hour stroll. The west facing aspect makes it one of the better sunset beaches on the peninsula too, with an open horizon and no clutter to spoil the light.

The honest catch is that the cape gives you wildness, not comfort. There is no shade out on the sandbar, no bar, no sunbeds, and the exposed spit can be breezy, so a still beautiful day can turn brisk on the windward side. Come prepared with water, a hat and your own shade, and treat it as an expedition rather than a lie down. If you want the same stretch of coast with a bar and a bed behind you, the wider beach around Possidi village is the easier base, and for a livelier, fully organised scene the busier beaches up the peninsula towards Kallithea are the trade. Possidi rewards the walker and the sunset watcher above all.

West coast, Kassandra

Possidi sits on the western coast of Kassandra, the first peninsula of Halkidiki, reached by the road down through Possidi village to parking near the base of the cape. From there the sandbar is yours to walk out as far as you like.

A car is the practical way here. Come in the late afternoon to walk the cape in cooler light and stay for the sunset, which is when Possidi is at its most memorable, and bring water and shade for the open sand.

Common questions about Possidi

What is special about Possidi cape?

Possidi cape is a long natural sandbar that runs out into the sea for around a kilometre, with water on both sides, so one flank is often calm while the other catches the breeze. Walk out and the wide pale sand feels like a thin desert set in turquoise, with a small lighthouse from 1864 at the base of the spit. It is one of the most distinctive stretches of coast in Halkidiki.

Is Possidi beach organised with sunbeds?

The cape itself is largely unorganised, with no sunbeds, no shade and no bars out on the sandbar, which is part of its wild appeal and the reason to come prepared. The wider beach around Possidi village has more in the way of beach bars and sunbeds, with operators best confirmed for the season. Bring water, an umbrella and shade if you plan to stay on the cape.

Is Possidi beach good for a sunset?

Yes. Possidi sits on the western coast of Kassandra, so it faces the evening sun, and the open sandbar with water on both sides gives an uncluttered horizon that turns the whole spit gold and then pink. It is one of the finer places on the peninsula to time a late swim with the sunset.

Can you walk to the end of Possidi cape?

You can, and it is the best of the beach. It takes around half an hour to walk out to the tip, and the further you go the fewer people you meet, so the end of the spit is where the quiet and the sense of being surrounded by sea are strongest. Wear something on your feet and carry water, as there is no shade out there.

Is there a beach club at Possidi?

Not on the cape, which trades on wildness rather than service. The wider Possidi village beach has seasonal beach bars and sunbeds, and for a full club day with table service the livelier organised beaches further up Kassandra are the better call, listed in the Halkidiki beach clubs guide. Operators and prices move with the season, so confirm before you go.
