Sunset Beach is the west facing shore of Gili Air, the island closest to Lombok and, for many, the best balance of the three Gilis. As the name says, this is the sunset side, where the sun drops behind Gili Trawangan with the silhouettes of Bali's volcanoes beyond on a clear evening. It is lined with the swings and beanbags that the Gilis are known for, and it draws a relaxed late afternoon crowd that is livelier than quiet Meno but a long way short of Trawangan's scrum.
Here is the value angle on those famous swings. They look free in the photos, but most sit just outside a beach bar that expects you to buy a drink to use them, so the honest read is that the swing is the price of a cocktail. The sunset itself, though, costs nothing. Spread a towel on the public sand with a cold drink from a warung or the shop and you get the same sky for a fraction of the bar tab. Gili Air is also the best value island to stay on overall, with more cheap warungs and rooms than Meno and a calmer scene than Trawangan, so this shore is an easy, affordable evening.
This beach suits couples, sunset chasers and budget travellers who want atmosphere without the markup. It is honest to note the swimming is shallow and best at higher tide, since the reef flat can be thin on the water at low tide, so it is more a sundowner shore than a serious swim. If you want the clearest snorkelling head to the east and south of the island instead. Come here for the light, pick your moment with the tide, and decide whether the swing is worth the drink.
Gili Air's west shore is relaxed beach bars and swings rather than big clubs. Operators and their terms change through the year, so compare the current options in our Gili Islands beach clubs directory.
The sunset side is lined with low key beach bars serving drinks, food and the swings and beanbags people come for, with a relaxed evening buzz. Using a swing usually means buying a drink. Names, opening status and prices change through the year and are to be confirmed.
For the lowest spend, the warungs set back from the sand serve cold drinks and Indonesian plates for far less than a beach bar table. Not a club, but the value choice for an evening on Gili Air. Stalls and prices vary and are to be confirmed.
Gili Air is the closest of the three islands to Lombok and the quickest, cheapest crossing from Bangsal harbour, with tourist fast boats also running from Bali and Lombok. Boats land on the south side, and from the harbour Sunset Beach is a short walk or cidomo pony cart ride across to the west shore. There are no cars or motorbikes, so you cover the island on foot or by hired bicycle.
The island loop is easy to walk or cycle, so transport is rarely a cost once you arrive. Bring cash for warungs and drinks since cards are not always taken, pack reef safe sun cream and water shoes for the coral, and head to the west shore about an hour before sundown to find a free patch of sand before the bars fill.

Usually not. Most of the famous swings sit just outside a beach bar that expects you to buy a drink to use them, so in practice the swing costs the price of a cocktail. The sunset itself and the public sand are free, so you can watch the same sky from a towel for nothing.
Yes, arguably the best value of the three Gilis. It has more cheap warungs and rooms than quiet Meno and a calmer, less pricey scene than Trawangan, while still offering plenty of cafes, bars and dive shops. It is a strong budget base for the islands.
Yes, though it is shallow. The west shore is a sheltered reef flat that is best for swimming at higher tide, since the water can be thin at low tide. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed and there are no lifeguards, so check the tide and wear water shoes for the coral.
Not on the sunset side. For the clearest water and coral, head to the east and south shores of the island, where you can snorkel off the beach. The west shore is better for the sunset and a relaxed drink than for serious snorkelling.
Aim to be on the west shore about an hour before sundown to settle in. The dry season months of May to September give the clearest skies and the best chance of seeing Bali's volcanoes behind Gili Trawangan as the sun drops. Times shift through the year, so check locally.
