The verdict

Best for. Couples who dive or who want true seclusion far from the day boats, with a headland sunset and a slow pace rather than a powder sand showpiece.

Best spot. Take a morning dive out into the Bligh Water, then claim the headland for the evening, when the light spreads across the sea and the resort goes quiet.

Know this. The swimming beach is modest and the reef shallows at low tide, so for white sand lounging the islands are better. The diving is the reason to come. Rates to be confirmed.

The honest read

Wananavu is the Fiji a lot of couples never reach, and that is exactly its charm. It sits on a headland near Rakiraki on the Sun Coast, the dry northern tip of Viti Levu, two hours up the Kings Road from Nadi and well off the day trip map. There are no catamarans unloading crowds and no strip of bars, just a small resort on a green point, the Pacific wrapping around it on three sides, and a horizon that goes on forever. For two people who want to feel like they have slipped away from the holiday machine, this is one of the most secluded easy to reach corners in the country.

The real reason to come is underwater. The seas off Rakiraki and out into the Bligh Water are world renowned, a playground of walls and pinnacles dressed in the soft corals that earned Fiji its reputation, with dozens of sites within reach and a dive centre on hand. A couple who dives can build whole days around it, a morning down on the reef and an afternoon doing very little, and the seclusion that can feel quiet to some is precisely what divers want. Above the water, the headland gives you the other gift, a sunset with nothing in the way, the light running gold and then rose across the sea while the resort settles into evening and you have the point more or less to yourselves.

The honest catch, and we would rather you hear it from us, is the beach itself. Wananavu is a diving base and a seclusion retreat, not a powder sand showpiece. The private beach is modest, fringed by reef that shallows at low tide, so the swimming is tide dependent and the pool earns its keep. If your idea of romance is a long flat sweep of white sand and a glassy lagoon to wade into at any hour, you will be happier out on the Mamanuca or Yasawa islands, or down at Natadola on the Coral Coast. But if you dive, or you simply want to be far from everyone with a sunset and each other, Wananavu rewards the drive. Rates are to be confirmed.

The club layer

Clubs on this beach

Wananavu is a quiet headland resort rather than a public beach lined with clubs, so the experience here is the resort and its dive centre. For a true beach club you can book by the day, Fiji's float and island clubs sit south in the Mamanucas, gathered in the directory. Rates and any minimum spend move with the season, so ask the venue when you enquire.

Rakiraki, Sun Coast

Wananavu sits on a headland near Rakiraki at the northern tip of Viti Levu, about two hours by road from Nadi International Airport along the Kings Road. It is a drive rather than a boat transfer, which is part of why it stays so quiet, and Rakiraki town is roughly ten minutes away for supplies.

Bring reef safe sun cover and your dive certification if you have it, since the diving is the main event. Swim around the higher tides, when the reef has water over it, and lean on the pool when the flats are low. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed and there is no promise of lifeguard cover, so read the day and stay near the shore.

Common questions about Wananavu

Is Wananavu good for couples?

Yes, for a particular kind of couple. Wananavu is a quiet headland resort near Rakiraki on the Sun Coast, far from the day boats and the crowds, and it is lovely for two if you dive or you want seclusion and a sunset from the point. The honest catch is that the swimming beach is modest rather than a powder sand showpiece, so couples who only want lounging on white sand will be happier on the islands.

Is the diving good at Wananavu?

Yes, it is the main reason to come. The waters off Rakiraki and out into the Bligh Water are widely rated among the best in Fiji, with walls and pinnacles covered in the soft corals the country is famous for. There is a dive centre at the resort and many dozens of sites within reach. Conditions and visibility vary with current and weather, so dive with the local operators and follow their guidance.

Can you swim at Wananavu beach?

You can, with realistic expectations. The resort has a small private beach fringed by reef, and like much of Fiji the water shallows over the reef flats at low tide, so the best swimming is around the higher tides, with the pool as a reliable backup. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed and there is no promise of lifeguard cover, so read the day and treat the sea as unsupervised.

How do you get to Wananavu and Rakiraki?

Wananavu sits on the northern tip of Viti Levu near Rakiraki, about two hours by road from Nadi International Airport along the Kings Road. It is a drive rather than a boat transfer, which keeps it quiet and off the day trip map. Rakiraki town is roughly ten minutes away for supplies and a look at local life.

When is the best time to visit Wananavu?

The dry season from May to October brings the clearest water, the calmest seas and the steadiest sunsets, and the Sun Coast lives up to its name as one of the drier corners of Fiji. Diving runs year round, but the dry months tend to offer the best visibility. Whenever you come, the sunset from the headland is the romantic moment to plan around.
