The verdict

Best for. Couples chasing the Fiji of the imagination, where soft white sand meets water through every shade of turquoise and the snorkelling starts at your ankles.

Best spot. Stay a night or two on Nanuya Lailai and take the lagoon at dawn, before the day boats arrive, when the bay is glass and entirely yours.

Know this. It is far, deep in the northern Yasawas, so a rushed day trip wastes it. Commit to the boat, sleep on the island and let the place slow you down.

The honest read

The Blue Lagoon is the picture most people mean when they close their eyes and think of Fiji, and standing on its sand it is hard to argue with the reputation. The bay sits on Nanuya Lailai in the northern Yasawa Islands, a curve of soft white sand against water so clear and so layered with turquoise that it looks tinted. Low green islands ring the horizon, the coral starts a few strokes from the shore, and the name comes from the island next door, used for the film. For a couple it is the rare famous beach that does not disappoint in person.

What makes it sing for two is the gentleness of it all. The water is sheltered and calm, the snorkelling is the easy, joyful kind you can do straight off the sand with a mask and a slow breath, and the pace of island life strips away any hurry. Mornings are the magic hour, when the bay lies flat as glass before the breeze and the day boats arrive, and evenings soften into the kind of quiet where the only sound is the water and the palms. Sleep on the island and the lagoon becomes yours at both ends of the day.

The honest catch is the distance, and it is a real one. The Blue Lagoon is deep in the Yasawas, four to five hours by the Yasawa Flyer ferry from Port Denarau or a costly seaplane hop, and a day trip that gives you an hour on the sand at midday, shared with a cruise boat, sells the place badly short. This is not a beach to tick off between flights. It is a beach to commit to, to reach slowly and to stay on, so that you catch the empty dawn rather than the crowded noon. Give it an overnight and the Blue Lagoon hands you the version that earns every superlative.

The club layer

Stays on this beach

The Blue Lagoon is a place you stay rather than a club you buy into for the day. Island resorts front the bay on Nanuya Lailai, and Fiji's daybed and pontoon clubs sit far away in the Mamanucas, which is where the directory points. Resort names are correct at the time of writing, and day visitor terms and rates are to be confirmed.

1
Blue Lagoon Beach Resort

Blue Lagoon Beach Resort

A long standing resort on the Nacula side of the lagoon, often named the best base in the northern Yasawas, with rooms on the sand and easy access to the snorkelling. The natural choice for a couple who want to wake on the bay. Room and day visitor terms to be confirmed.

2
Nanuya Island Resort

Nanuya Island Resort

A small, calm resort on Nanuya Lailai itself, right on the Blue Lagoon, with an intimate, adults leaning feel that suits couples. The quieter pick for two who want the lagoon at the door and little else to distract. Rates and any day terms to be confirmed.

Mamanuca day clubs

The Mamanuca day clubs

If a day pass beach club is what you want, Fiji's float and island clubs sit in the Mamanucas, much closer to Nadi than the Yasawas. The directory covers them and how to book a daybed. We never invent a venue, so anything unverified is marked to be confirmed.

Getting there and essentials

Nanuya Lailai, Yasawa Islands

The Blue Lagoon sits in the sheltered bay on Nanuya Lailai in the northern Yasawa group, near Nacula. Most travellers reach it on the Yasawa Flyer, the daily passenger ferry from Port Denarau near Nadi, which takes roughly four to five hours to the northern islands. A seaplane cuts that to about thirty minutes for far more money. Either way it is a journey, so build in a travel day each way.

There are no shops or banks on the island, so carry what you need and settle resort extras as advised. The lagoon is calm and the snorkelling is easy, but currents move through the channels, so stay near the shore and ask the resort about the day. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed and there is no promise of lifeguard cover.

Common questions about the Blue Lagoon

Is the Blue Lagoon in Fiji worth visiting?

Yes, it is widely rated the most photogenic beach in Fiji and it earns the title. Soft white sand meets water that runs through every shade of aqua and turquoise, ringed by low green islands. For couples it is close to the dream, and the snorkelling is gentle and rich. The honest caveat is the distance, since it sits deep in the Yasawa Islands and rewards an overnight stay rather than a rushed day.

Where is the Blue Lagoon in Fiji?

The Blue Lagoon sits in the sheltered bay on Nanuya Lailai, an island in the northern Yasawa group, near Nacula. It lies close to the island used for the film The Blue Lagoon, which lent the area its name. It is reached by the Yasawa Flyer ferry from Port Denarau or by seaplane, both from the Nadi area.

Can you snorkel at the Blue Lagoon?

Yes, the calm, clear water and the coral gardens make it one of the loveliest easy snorkels in Fiji, suitable for most levels straight off the sand. You can expect colourful coral and tropical fish in the shallows. Marine life is seasonal and never guaranteed, so ask your resort about the day's visibility and currents before you set off.

How do you get to the Blue Lagoon?

Most travellers take the Yasawa Flyer, the daily passenger ferry from Port Denarau near Nadi, which reaches the northern Yasawas in roughly four to five hours, or fly in by seaplane in about thirty minutes for far more money. Because of the distance, the Blue Lagoon is best enjoyed as an overnight stay rather than a long day trip.

Is there a beach club at the Blue Lagoon?

Not in the daybed and pontoon sense found in the Mamanucas. The lagoon is fronted by island resorts such as Blue Lagoon Beach Resort and Nanuya Island Resort, where you stay rather than buy a day pass. Fiji's true day clubs sit nearer Nadi. Resort names are correct at the time of writing and day visitor terms and rates are to be confirmed.
