The verdict

  • Best for: Adventurous swimmers who want one of the most dramatic coves in the Adriatic and will earn it, boat day trippers who want the showpiece stop, and photographers after the famous cliff framed gap.
  • Best spot: The pebble inside the cliff walls for the still, deep water and the view out through the narrow gap, reached either by boat or by the steep path down from above.
  • Know this: Stiniva is genuinely hard to reach, by a steep rocky path or by boat, with almost no facilities and little shade, so it rewards effort and early arrival rather than an easy beach day.

Sand
White pebble
A beach of large white pebble inside a near circular cove, with tall cliffs rising on either side and a narrow gap opening to the sea. The big pebble is hard underfoot, so water shoes are close to essential here.
Water
Clear, deep blue
The enclosed cove holds remarkably clear, deep blue water that is calm and sheltered inside the cliffs, with the narrow gap framing the open sea beyond. The clarity and the setting are why it draws so many boats.
Entry
Free public beach
The cove is free to walk onto and swim from. A small seasonal tavern may operate at the back of the cove with food, drink and a few loungers, with any charges set by the operator and to be confirmed.
Facilities
Very few, little shade
Facilities are minimal: at most a small seasonal tavern and almost no natural shade, so bring water, shoes and an umbrella. The lack of development is exactly what keeps the cove so dramatic and unspoilt.
Lifeguard
None, swim with care
There is no lifeguard at Stiniva, access is by a steep path or boat, and the cove can get busy with vessels in the narrow entrance. The water is calm inside but deep, so mind your depth, take care on the path and watch for boat traffic. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
Best months
June to September
Warm, clear water and calm seas run through summer, when the boat trips also run. July and August bring the most boats into the small cove, so June and September give the same drama with a little more space.
The honest read

Stiniva is the cove that put Vis on the bucket list. On the wild southern coast of the island, it is a near circular bay almost completely enclosed by tall cliffs, with only a narrow gap a few metres wide opening to the open sea, so from inside it feels like a natural amphitheatre filled with deep blue water. It was once voted the best beach in Europe, and while such titles come and go, the sheer drama of the place is real: there are few coves in the Adriatic that look quite like this.

The water lives up to the setting. Inside the cliffs it is clear, deep and usually calm, sheltered from the open sea, and the view back out through the narrow gap is the shot everyone comes for. The pebble is large and white, hard on bare feet, and there is little more here than the beach itself and perhaps a small seasonal tavern at the back, which is part of the appeal. Stiniva is about the place, not the facilities.

The honest note is that getting there is the whole challenge. By land it is a steep, rough path down from a small car park above, demanding proper shoes and a head for the climb back up in the heat. By sea it is a popular stop for boat trips, which means that from late morning the narrow cove can fill with vessels and visitors, and the wild bay you imagined can feel crowded. Come early, by an early boat or the first walk down, and Stiniva delivers everything the photographs promise. Arrive at midday in August and you will share it with a flotilla.

Getting there and essentials

Stiniva is on the southern coast of Vis, reached by land down a steep, rough path from a small parking area above, or by sea on one of the many boat trips and water taxis that call into the cove in summer. Most visitors arrive by boat because the walk is demanding.

The path is steep and rocky and the climb back is hard in the heat, so wear proper shoes and carry water, and there is little shade below. There is no lifeguard, the water is deep and the narrow entrance gets boat traffic, so mind your depth and take care; conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

Common questions

Why is Stiniva Beach famous?

Stiniva is famous for its dramatic setting, a near circular cove almost enclosed by tall cliffs with a narrow gap to the sea, and was once voted the best beach in Europe. The clear, deep blue water inside the cliffs makes it one of the most striking beaches in the Adriatic.

How do you get to Stiniva Beach on Vis?

You can reach Stiniva by a steep, rough path down from a small car park above, or by boat trip or water taxi, which is how most visitors arrive. The walk is demanding and the climb back is hard in the heat, so proper shoes and water are essential.

Is Stiniva Beach worth the hike?

For most people, yes, if they come prepared and early. The cove is genuinely dramatic and the water is superb, but the path is steep and facilities are minimal, so it rewards effort rather than offering an easy beach day. Arrive early to beat the boat crowds.

Are there facilities at Stiniva?

Very few. At most a small seasonal tavern operates at the back of the cove, and there is almost no natural shade, so bring water, water shoes and an umbrella. Any tavern hours and charges are to be confirmed.

When is the best time to visit Stiniva?

Early in the day, before the boat trips arrive from late morning and fill the small cove. June and September offer the same clear water and drama as peak summer with fewer boats; conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
