Bonj Beach Club

Bonj is the cove, a pocket of pines and white stone a short promenade west of Hvar harbour, and the club on it has been renting the same view since 1927. The bones are glorious: a colonnaded bathing pavilion from the Art Deco years, platforms built directly over the Adriatic, and steel ladders that drop bathers into water deep and clear enough to shame a swimming pool. After a full renovation in 2021 the operation shed its historic Bonj les Bains name and now sells the day as Beach Club Hvar, with an online booking engine, a restaurant under the arches and a small spa doing massages behind the columns.

In our Dalmatian coast club directory this is the refined pick, second only to the island day club offshore. What the directory could not fit is the value map: which of the three bed tiers earns its price, what the early closing time does to your plans, and where the same sea gets 80 percent cheaper within a ten minute walk.

The pricing here is a staircase over the water, and the trick is knowing which step stops paying. The reported 50 euro sunbed is, for Hvar town, honest money: the town has almost no true beach, every serviced spot charges something, and this one comes with the colonnade, ladders instead of urchin gravel, and a mattress you do not feel the stone through. The 170 euro deck duo buys position, two beds floating a metre above the swimming lane, and for a couple marking an occasion it is the best seat in the bay. The 295 euro cabana adds shade, prosecco and fruit to the same position, which is 125 euros for a bottle, a plate and a roof, and only a group of three or four splitting it makes that arithmetic respectable.

The club runs on a day rhythm that surprises people. Doors open at ten, the restaurant carries the afternoon, the spa works through its massage list behind the columns, and by six the staff are stacking the day away while the light is still gold. There is no DJ arc, no sunset set, no evening bar: the venue that hosts white weddings under the colonnade at night is a different booking entirely. Treat it as the calm centre of a Hvar day, then walk back toward the harbour for the evening, and its hours stop being a flaw.

Where it genuinely loses points is family friendliness at the toddler end, since the platforms drop into deep water with no shallows, and value at the drinks list, where resort pricing applies. And the great unspoken alternative sits along the same shoreline path: keep walking and the next bar around the headland reportedly rents loungers at 40 to 50 euros with music attached, and the barefoot rock bar past it at around 20, both swimming in the identical aquamarine. Bonj is what the extra money looks like when it is spent well; it is still extra money.

Strip the furniture away and Bonj is a pine rimmed notch of white stone and pebble with some of the clearest water on the island, part of the seafront path that runs from the harbour toward the headlands. The public edges of the cove fill with towels by late morning in summer, a reminder that the sea itself never charged anyone. No boat, no taxi, no gravel: from Hvar harbour you follow the waterfront promenade west for roughly ten minutes, under pines and past the swimmers, until the white columns appear at Setaliste Tonija Petrica 3. That walk is one of the nicest approaches to any club in this index and removes every transport excuse. Catamarans and ferries from Split make Hvar an easy day trip in season, though an overnight lets you claim the morning platforms before the day boats arrive.
