Bacvice is the beach everyone in Split ends up at, and the reason is simple: it is sand, not pebble. On a coast that runs almost entirely on shingle and rock, a broad sandy bay a short walk from the old town and the ferries is a small miracle, and the city treats it that way. The water is the other half of the appeal. It stays shallow a long way out and warms early in the season, so children can wade safely and grown ups can play picigin, the local game of keeping a small ball off the surface in ankle deep water, which was invented right here.
By day it is a family beach and a swimming beach, easy and unfussy, with cafes and showers close at hand. After dark it becomes something else. The terraces on the rise behind the sand fill with bars and clubs, music carries across the bay and Bacvice turns into one of the liveliest nightlife corners in the city. That dual life is its charm for some and its drawback for others, so it pays to know which Bacvice you are turning up for.
The honest note is that all of this happens in a small, central bay, so Bacvice is rarely quiet and rarely empty in season. The shallow water that makes it so good for children also clouds up when the sand is churned by a crowd, and on a peak August afternoon the sand can vanish under towels. If you want sand and calm rather than sand and a scene, come early in the morning, or trade Bacvice for the pebble and pine of Kasjuni a little way west along the Marjan shore.
Bacvice runs on a ring of bar and club terraces above the sand rather than a single beach club. We describe them factually and route enquiries through our directory; we never invent details.
The rise behind the sand is lined with cafes and bars that serve drinks and food by day and shift into music venues and clubs at night, which is what gives Bacvice its after dark reputation. Specific venues, hours and any minimum spend change by season and are to be confirmed.
The main bay is free to use, with sand and shallow water open to all. Loungers and umbrellas from the operators carry a charge, but the sand itself costs nothing and is the simplest way to enjoy the beach.
Bacvice sits just southeast of the old town and the main ferry port, an easy walk of around ten minutes from the centre and the bus and train stations, so most visitors simply stroll over. It is among the easiest beaches in the city to reach on foot, which is part of why it stays so busy.
Because it is so central it is at its most crowded in the middle of the day in high summer, so early morning gives you the calmest water and the most sand. The bay is shallow and gentle, but conditions are typical and never guaranteed, so keep watch over children near the water.
Bacvice runs on its bar and club terraces rather than one named club, but tell us your date and party and we will point you to the right beach club style venues around Split. No charge to enquire.
Yes. Bacvice is one of the very few genuinely sandy beaches on this stretch of coast, which is why it is so popular. The sand is fine and the bay is broad, a real contrast to the pebble and rock that line most of the Dalmatian shore.
Very. The water stays shallow and warm a long way out, so small children can wade and paddle safely close to shore. It does get busy and the water can cloud when crowded, so keep children in view and follow local advice; conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
Picigin is a local game invented at Bacvice in which players stand in ankle deep water and keep a small ball from touching the surface with quick dives and slaps. You will see it played all summer, and the shallow sandy bay is the reason it began here.
Yes. Walking onto the sand and swimming is free. Sunloungers, umbrellas and the bar terraces have their own charges set by each operator, which are to be confirmed, but the beach itself costs nothing to use.
Yes. The terraces above the sand are lined with bars and clubs that come alive after dark, making Bacvice one of the busiest nightlife spots in Split. If you want a quiet beach day, come early or choose Kasjuni instead.
