The verdict

Best for. Families and anyone after flat, shallow water, since the main bay is almost lagoon calm and barely deepens for a long way out.

Best spot. The sheltered lagoon bay directly under the mountain, with tavernas a few steps back for shade and lunch.

Know this. Stavros is small, so the calm bay fills quickly in summer. The separate outer beach has more space and gentle waves.

The honest read

Stavros is the bay film fans know without realising it. The bare, dramatic mountain that rises straight behind the sand is where the final dance of Zorba the Greek was filmed, and that backdrop turns an otherwise modest beach into something memorable. It sits at the northern end of the Akrotiri peninsula, a short drive from Chania, and the contrast of the harsh grey mountain against the soft turquoise bay is the whole point of the place.

What makes Stavros genuinely useful is the water. The main bay is almost a lagoon, sheltered and so shallow that you can wade a long way out with the sea barely past your knees. For families with small children it is one of the calmest, safest feeling swims near Chania in normal conditions, and the tavernas a few steps back make a long, easy day simple to manage. There is a separate outer beach too, more open and with a little gentle movement on the water.

The honest note is size. Stavros is compact, and that calm lagoon is no secret, so in July and August it fills early and the sunbeds and parking go quickly. It is also a developed little resort corner rather than a wild escape. Come for the easy family swimming, the lunch with a view and the film history, arrive early in high summer, and use the outer beach when the main bay feels full.

The club layer

Clubs on this beach

Stavros is a family beach with tavernas and sunbeds rather than a named club. The organised sand and the restaurants behind the bay cover the essentials in a relaxed, low key way. Operators change year to year, so confirm before you travel, and the Crete beach clubs guide covers the more polished options elsewhere on the island.

Getting there and essentials

Akrotiri peninsula, Crete

Stavros lies at the northern tip of the Akrotiri peninsula, northeast of Chania and beyond the airport and the monasteries. By car it is a drive of around half an hour from Chania town on a clear road, ending at the bay where parking sits just behind the sand.

There are limited bus services from Chania in season, but a car gives the most flexibility, especially for reaching the quieter outer beach. Once you arrive, the lagoon bay, the outer beach and the tavernas are all within an easy walk.

Common questions about Stavros

Why is Stavros beach famous?

For its mountain. The steep, bare peak rising behind the bay is where the final dance scene of Zorba the Greek was filmed, and that backdrop gives the calm turquoise lagoon a dramatic setting. It is a short drive from Chania, which adds to its popularity.

Is Stavros good for young children?

It is one of the better family beaches near Chania. The main bay is sheltered and so shallow that you can wade far out in calm, gentle water, and tavernas sit right behind the sand. Supervise closely and treat the sea as unsupervised, as cover is not guaranteed.

Is there more than one beach at Stavros?

Yes. There is the famous calm lagoon bay under the mountain, and a separate outer beach that is more open with a little gentle movement on the water. The outer beach is usually less crowded and a useful overflow when the lagoon fills up.

Does Stavros get crowded?

In July and August the calm lagoon fills early, and sunbeds and parking go quickly because the bay is small and well known. Arriving in the morning makes a real difference, and the outer beach offers more room when the main bay is busy.

When is the best time to visit Stavros?

June or September for warm, calm water and a quieter bay than the peak summer weeks. Within the day, mornings are best for space and parking, and the light on the mountain behind the bay is lovely late in the afternoon.
