The verdict

  • Best for: Families and value minded swimmers who want soft sand, gentle water and a full promenade without paying for the privilege, since the beach itself costs nothing.
  • Best spot: The wide stretch toward the far north end, away from the busiest sunbed rows, where there is room for your own towel and a clear view back to the Penon de Ifach.
  • Know this: The only real spend is optional. Bring your own parasol and a cool bag, park a few streets back, and a full day here can be all but free.

The honest read

If Moraig and Granadella are the wild coves you earn, La Fossa is the easy town beach you simply walk onto. A long ribbon of fine golden sand runs north from the great limestone Penon de Ifach, the entry is gentle, the promenade behind it is lined with bars, shops and a supermarket, and the whole thing is free to enter and to swim. For a family day or a no fuss swim with everything to hand, this is the best value beach in Calpe and one of the most reliable on the coast.

The honest note is that nothing here is exclusive, and in August it is busy. The sunbed rows fill, the beach bars are priced for the season and the streets nearest the sand go to paid parking. None of that is a problem if you treat the spending as optional, which it is. The beach is wide enough that you never need to hire a thing, the far north end thins out, and a few streets back the parking is usually free. The famous postcard is the view of the rock, and that costs nothing at all.

The value plan is the easy one. Come in the shoulder months when the water is warm, the services are open and the parking is sane, bring your own parasol and a cool bag rather than buying rounds, and picnic on the sand with the supermarket behind you. Save the beach bar lunch for a treat, swim in the calm morning, and stay for the late light on the Penon de Ifach. Anyone chasing clear water snorkelling should go to Moraig or Granadella instead, because La Fossa is about sand, swimming and ease rather than rockpools.

Getting there and essentials

La Fossa runs along the north side of Calpe, around thirty five minutes from Benidorm by car and reachable by regional bus and the tram line to Calpe town. The beach is free, and the only cost is optional, sunbeds, promenade bars and paid parking in the busiest streets by the sand.

The cheapest plan is to park a few streets back where spaces are usually free, bring your own parasol and a cool bag, and picnic on the sand. Come in the shoulder months for warm water and easy parking, and swim in the calm of the morning before the beach fills.

Before you go

Common questions

Is Playa de la Fossa free?

Yes. The beach is free to enter and to swim, and it is wide enough that you can lay a towel without hiring anything. The only spend is optional, a sunbed and parasol set, a drink on the promenade or paid parking in the busiest streets. Bring your own shade and you can have a full day for nothing.

Is Playa de la Fossa the same as Levante beach?

Yes. Playa de la Fossa is also called Levante beach. It is the long golden sand beach on the north side of the Penon de Ifach in Calpe, a different beach from the smaller Arenal Bol on the south side of the rock.

Is Playa de la Fossa good for families and swimming?

Yes. It is fine golden sand with a gentle entry and a long promenade, well suited to easy swimming and a family day. Floating platforms, lifeguards and accessible bathing are typical in summer. Conditions are usually calm but typical rather than guaranteed, so follow the daily flags.

How do you save money at Playa de la Fossa?

Bring your own parasol and a cool bag rather than paying for sunbeds and beach bar rounds, and park a few streets back where spaces are free rather than in the busiest paid zones near the sand. A picnic on the beach with the supermarket behind the promenade is the cheapest lunch by far.

When is the best time to visit Playa de la Fossa?

May, June, September and early October give warm water, full facilities and far easier parking than August. Mornings are calmest and coolest for swimming, and the late afternoon light on the Penon de Ifach is the best free show in Calpe.
