Mare e Sole Beach
Best for. Families and first time visitors who want a simple, reachable beach day near Ajaccio.
Best spot. Under the pines at the back of the sand, where there is shade through the hottest hours.
Know this. This is one of the most accessible good beaches near the city, so it fills fast on summer weekends.
Mare e Sole, which many maps also label Ruppione, is the beach Ajaccio reaches for when it wants sand without an expedition. It lies on the road that curls south of the city toward Coti Chiavari, close enough for an easy morning and backed by a stand of pines that gives the one thing so many Corsican beaches lack in summer, which is real shade. The well known beach restaurant behind the sand lends the place its name and its easygoing mood.
The water here is the calm, clear sort you get inside the Gulf of Ajaccio, with a gentle entry that makes it a sensible choice for families with small children. It is not a wild, dramatic bay and it does not pretend to be. It is a comfortable, well placed beach that does the simple things well, which is exactly why locals keep coming back.
The honest caveat is popularity. Because Mare e Sole is so easy to reach from the city, it draws a crowd on warm weekends and through August. Come on a weekday, or early in the day, and you get the same soft sand and clear water with far more room to enjoy it.
Clubs on this beach
Mare e Sole is an easygoing public beach rather than a club scene. The restaurant behind the sand is the heart of the place for lunch and a drink, and there may be sunbed hire in season, though that is best confirmed on the day. For organised beach clubs you would look elsewhere in the gulf.

Gulf of Ajaccio, Corsica
Mare e Sole sits on the southern shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio, on the D55 road between Porticcio and Coti Chiavari, roughly twenty kilometres from the city centre. The drive is straightforward and takes about half an hour outside of peak traffic.
A car is the easiest way to arrive, with parking close to the sand. Seasonal bus services run along parts of this coast, but timings vary, so confirm them locally if you would rather not drive.

Common questions about Mare e Sole
Is Mare e Sole the same as Ruppione beach?
Yes. The beach is widely known by both names, with Mare e Sole taken from the long running restaurant behind the sand. You will see either label on maps and signs in the area.
Is Mare e Sole good for families?
It is one of the better family choices near Ajaccio, with soft sand, gentle water and pine shade at the back. Lifeguard cover is not guaranteed, so supervise children in the sea.
How far is Mare e Sole from Ajaccio?
It is about twenty kilometres south of the city on the D55, which is around half an hour by car when traffic is light. That accessibility is its biggest draw and the reason it gets busy.
Is there shade at Mare e Sole?
Yes, more than most beaches nearby, thanks to the pines along the back of the sand. The shaded spots are popular, so arrive early in summer to claim one.
Are there beach clubs at Mare e Sole?
Not in the daybed and bottle service sense. The beach restaurant is the main feature for food and drink. For beach clubs proper, see the Corsica beach clubs guide.
