This is an exposed beach with frequent surf and possible currents. It is wonderful to look at but not a guaranteed calm swim.

Sand
Golden sand and dunes
A curving sweep of golden sand backed by tall, sculpted dunes and maquis, wild and undeveloped at the western edge of the Agriates.
Water
Open and lively
The sea here is open and often lively, with surf and the occasional current, so swimming can be fun in calm spells but demands respect.
Entry
Free, short walk
The beach is free public sand, reached by a short walk down from the car park above, with no resort behind it.
Facilities
Very limited
Facilities are minimal, with little more than the car park and any seasonal stall, so bring your own water, food and shade.

Warm sea and good light, with calmer spells more likely than in a blustery shoulder week, though the beach is always weather dependent.
The honest read

Ostriconi marks the western gateway to the Agriates, where the Ostriconi river slides down to meet the sea and the empty desert of maquis begins. It is a wild, scenic beach rather than a calm swimming bay, and its signature is the tall, sculpted dunes that rise behind a curving sweep of golden sand. From the dune crest the view over the beach, the river mouth and the green hills is one of the most photographed in northern Corsica, and it is the reason many people make the short walk down even on a windy day.

This is the start of the Sentier des Douaniers, the old customs path that traces the wild Agriates coast, so Ostriconi draws walkers as much as beachgoers. The undeveloped setting, the dunes and the river give it a raw, natural beauty that the manicured resort beaches lack. On a calm day the sea can be inviting and the wide sand nearly empty, a place to feel the elemental side of the island rather than to be served a cocktail on a lounger.

Now the honest part. Ostriconi faces the open sea and is exposed to wind and swell, so the water is frequently livelier than the sheltered bays of the east coast, with surf and the chance of currents. That makes it less reliable for easy family swimming and means you should judge the sea carefully and keep within your depth. Facilities are minimal, the walk down and back up the dunes is real in the heat, and there is no resort to fall back on. Come for the scenery and the walking, not for guaranteed flat calm water.

Who should skip it: families set on a calm, shallow swim and anyone who needs loungers and a beach bar, who will be happier on a sheltered eastern bay. Who should go: walkers, photographers and anyone drawn to wild dunes and open sea. Pair Ostriconi with the wild Agriates beaches of Saleccia and Lotu reached from Saint Florent, or the long, easier town beach at Calvi a short drive west.

The club layer

Clubs on and near the sand

Ostriconi has no beach clubs. It is a wild, protected beach with minimal facilities, so there is nothing formal to book on the sand. Use the Corsica club directory if you want a bookable beach day elsewhere on the island.

  • No club on the sand
Ostriconi is undeveloped, with no beach club and only the car park and any seasonal stall behind it. Bring your own water, food and shade, and treat it as a wild beach rather than a serviced one.
  • Free wild sand
The golden sand is free public beach, reached by a short walk from the car park above and backed by protected dunes. It is rarely crowded, since most visitors come for the view and the walking.
Getting there and essentials

Ostriconi lies at the western end of the Agriates in northern Corsica, near where the main road runs between the Balagne and Saint Florent, which makes it one of the more accessible wild beaches in the area. You park in a car park on the high ground above the beach and walk down a path through the dunes to reach the sand, a short but real descent that you repeat on the way back up. Most visitors drive, as public transport here is limited.

Because the beach is undeveloped, bring water, food and sun shade, since there is little or no provision once you are down on the sand. The open setting means wind and swell matter, so check conditions and pick a calmer day if swimming is your priority rather than scenery. Early or late light flatters the dunes and the river mouth for photographs, and the beach is rarely crowded. June and September give the best balance of warm sea and settled weather, though Ostriconi is always at the mercy of the wind.

Common questions

Is Ostriconi good for swimming?

It can be on a calm day, but Ostriconi faces the open sea and is often lively, with surf and the chance of currents. It is less reliable for easy family swimming than the sheltered eastern bays, so judge conditions and stay within your depth.

Why is Ostriconi famous?

It is known for its dramatic dunes and the view from the dune crest over the curving golden sand and the river mouth, one of the most photographed scenes in northern Corsica. It also marks the start of the Sentier des Douaniers coastal path.

How do you get to Ostriconi?

You drive to a car park on the high ground above the beach, near the road between the Balagne and Saint Florent, then walk down a path through the dunes to the sand. Public transport is limited, so most visitors come by car.

Are there facilities at Ostriconi?

Very few. There is the car park and perhaps a seasonal stall, but no resort behind the beach. Bring your own water, food and shade, and do not rely on finding anything to buy on the sand.

Is Ostriconi worth visiting?

For scenery and walking, very much so. The dunes, the river mouth and the wild setting are special. For a guaranteed calm swim it is less dependable, so come for the views and the coastal path rather than flat water.
