Both sit on Thailand's Andaman coast, both have warm clear water and the famous karst scenery, and both will cost a fraction of what the same week runs in Europe. The difference is pace and shape. Koh Lanta is a long, laid back island of quiet beaches strung down a single coast road. Krabi on the mainland, really Ao Nang and Railay, is busier, more dramatic and the natural hub for boat trips.
For the value sceptic the choice is mostly about what you do with your days and how much you mind moving around. Koh Lanta rewards staying put, with cheap cottages and beaches that empty out as you head south. Krabi packs more scenery and more day trips into a smaller area, but Railay's access by boat only and its resort prices push the bill up. Where Koh Lanta wins
Peace and price. The beaches grow quieter the further south you go, and Kantiang Bay is the one travellers extend their stay for, unable to make themselves leave. Cottages are cheap, the pace is slow, and you can settle in for a week without spending much at all. For families and anyone who wants to plant themselves on one calm beach, Koh Lanta is the easy answer.
Where Krabi wins
Scenery and access. Railay's cliffs are among the most striking in Thailand, and Ao Nang is the springboard for the Phi Phi and Hong island day trips that fill most Krabi itineraries. You need no car, the boats do the work, and there is more nightlife and the famous rock climbing on tap. If you want drama and motion rather than stillness, Krabi delivers.
The money question
Here is where the value sceptic earns their keep. Koh Lanta is simply the cheaper place to exist, where cottages and beach bars keep the daily spend low. Krabi's catch is Railay, beautiful but reachable only by boat, which lets its resorts charge a premium for the privilege of waking up there. The smart move is to sleep in Ao Nang, where rooms cost less, and ride the ten minute longtail across to Railay for the day.
The honest catch on each
Koh Lanta goes very quiet in the low season, with some places shutting from roughly May to October, so check before you book. Krabi's Ao Nang strip can feel built up and touristy, and Railay's coves crowd with day trippers by late morning, so the dreamy empty beach photo usually means an early start. Both are excellent, but each has a season and a rhythm worth knowing.
