The verdict

  • Best for: First time visitors who want the classic Positano view and the buzz of its main beach, and who accept crowds and high prices for it.
  • Best spot: The free public section toward the western end, or a paid lounger early in the day before the lido sections fill.
  • Know this: This is a busy, pricey town beach with grey volcanic sand, not a quiet escape, so come early or out of peak season.

The honest read

Spiaggia Grande is the main beach of Positano and the source of one of the most famous views in Italy, the tumble of pastel houses climbing the steep hillside above the sea, with the dome of Santa Maria Assunta at its heart. It is the postcard that draws people to the Amalfi Coast, and standing on the sand looking back at the town genuinely lives up to it. The beach is a working hub too, with the ferry jetty at one end and a line of restaurants and bars behind the sand.

The honest read is that this is a town beach, busy and commercial, rather than a quiet retreat. The sand is the coarse grey volcanic mix typical of the coast, not soft and golden, and much of the beach is given over to paid lido sections where sunbeds and umbrellas come at Amalfi Coast prices that climb steeply in peak season. There is a free public area, but it is the smaller part and fills early, so arriving late on an August afternoon means little space and high costs for what you do find.

The water saves the day, clear and generally calm and deep enough close to shore for a proper swim straight off the beach. To enjoy Spiaggia Grande at its best, come in May, June or September, arrive early for the free section or a reasonably priced lounger, and treat the view as the main event. If you want quieter sand, the smaller beach of Fornillo just west along a cliff path is calmer, and arriving or leaving by ferry gives you the celebrated approach from the water.

The club layer

Clubs on this beach

Spiaggia Grande mixes a free public area with paid lido sections rather than a single nightclub style beach club. For club style beds and bars, see our Amalfi Coast beach clubs directory.

1

Paid lido sections on the beach

Much of Spiaggia Grande is run as paid lido sections, with rows of sunbeds and umbrellas and attendant service right by the sea. They book up and prices climb in peak season, so reserve ahead where possible; operators and rates are to be confirmed.

2

Free public section

A free public area sits alongside the lidos toward one end of the beach, where you can lay a towel at no charge. It is the smaller part of the beach and fills early in summer, so arrive in the morning for space.

Getting there and essentials

Spiaggia Grande sits at the foot of Positano on the Amalfi Coast, reached on foot down the town stepped lanes from the main coast road, where the buses and limited parking are. The walk down is easy, but remember it is a steady climb back up to the road.

Many visitors arrive by ferry, which is often the most relaxed way to reach Positano in summer and delivers the famous view of the town from the water. The jetty sits at one end of the beach, so check the seasonal ferry timetables, and bring sensible shoes and sun protection for the steep, sun exposed town.

Common questions

Is Spiaggia Grande free in Positano?

Partly. There is a free public section toward one end of the beach where you can lay a towel at no charge, but it is the smaller part and fills early. Much of the beach is paid lido sections with sunbeds and umbrellas at Amalfi Coast prices, so arrive early for the free zone.

What is the sand like at Spiaggia Grande?

It is coarse grey volcanic sand mixed with small pebbles, typical of the Amalfi Coast rather than the soft golden sand of Atlantic beaches. Many visitors find water shoes useful for comfort, both on the sand and entering the water off the beach.

How do you get to Spiaggia Grande?

You walk down through Positano stepped lanes from the main coast road, where the buses and limited parking are, or you arrive by ferry, which is often the easiest way in summer and gives the famous view from the sea. The jetty sits at one end of the beach.

Can you swim at Spiaggia Grande?

Yes, the water is clear, generally calm and deep enough close to shore for an easy swim straight off the beach. Lifeguards patrol the main beach in peak season, conditions are usually settled but never guaranteed, so take normal care, especially near the ferry jetty.

When is the best time to visit Spiaggia Grande?

May, June and September bring warm, settled sea with lighter crowds and lower lido prices than the July and August peak. The Amalfi Coast is at its most pleasant in these shoulder months, when the free section and a lounger are far easier to find.
