Folie Marine is the resort that put a proper hotel and beach club on Jale beach, on the Ionian stretch of the Albanian Riviera near Himare, and it has grown into the most finished address on this coast. The brochure reads like a small town by the sea: several pools including one for children, a private beach of loungers, restaurants running from fresh fish and steaks to sushi and pasta, a MediSpa, and a nightlife programme that puts live acts on through the summer. Where much of the riviera is still a raw cove with a bar, Folie Marine is the polished, staffed, all in one version.

Our honest position, the same one we hold on the Albanian Riviera club directory, is that this coast rewards a mix of bays rather than a single club, and Folie Marine is the one you pick when you want the resort day done properly. As a romance address it leans in on purpose, with jacuzzi suites and a named escape package, but it is a lively resort, not a hideaway, and the next lines say who that suits.

Resort energy, not cove calm, sets the tone. Guests describe days that run from breakfast to the small hours, moving between the pools, the beach, the restaurants and the music without ever leaving the grounds, and that closed loop is the whole appeal for the people who love it. The pools carry the middle of the day, one large with its own bar and a shallow one for children, while the private beach holds the loungers below. It is busy, staffed and social, and if you wanted a silent stretch of sand this is the wrong end of the riviera.

The right hour for two is the sunset. Sundance is the resort's evening set, music as the light falls over the Ionian, and it is what the whole place is built around. A couple gets the best of Folie Marine by treating the pools and beach as the warm up and staying for the sunset and the dinner that follows, rather than arriving for a quiet lounge at noon. The Friday DJ and the Saturday dinner show push the night further for those who want it.

Food is a real strength for the coast. The kitchens run wider than most riviera bars manage, from fresh Ionian fish and steaks to sushi and pasta, with a pool bar and a beach bar keeping the drinks moving, and guests single out the range and the service. For an evening built around a table and a show, this is among the most capable spots on the coast.

Where it falls short is intimacy and certainty of access. The romance here is polished rather than hushed, and the loungers serve hotel guests first, so a non guest day is never guaranteed and the price is unposted. If you want the quiet version of this coast, wild Gjipe or a bare cove near Dhermi gives it, just without the pools, the sushi and the sunset show.

Jale itself is a compact Ionian bay reached by a steep road down from the coastal highway, with clear water over pebbles and a couple of operators sharing the sand, of which Folie Marine is the largest and most built up. The swimming off the bay is typically clear and deep quickly, in the character of this coast, and the wilder beaches lie a short drive either side. Folie Marine sits on Jale beach near Himare, about 13.5 kilometres from Dhermi, and the way in is a steep road down to the bay, so nearly everyone arrives by car or a transfer, with parking on site. Booking runs through the resort directly: the beach and club line takes bed and table enquiries, the Prive lounge has its own number, and accommodation is booked separately, with the busiest weeks of July and August worth securing early.
