The bar anchors the southern end of the beach at Dhermi, where the sand gives way to rock and the crowd finally loosens, and it trades on stillness rather than spectacle. Where the styled clubs up the shore stack loungers and turn the music up, Amar keeps a handful of beds, a short drinks list and a west facing cove that does the heavy lifting on its own.

Drymades runs its scene from north to south like a dial turning down. The party rooms, the Bali styled clubs and the panoramic sunset lounges cluster at the busy central and northern stretch, and by the time you reach Amar at the far end the rows of matching umbrellas have thinned to a scatter, the rock has taken over from the sand, and the volume has dropped to the sound of the water. That geography is the whole point: Amar is where couples and independent travellers come to sit out a long afternoon without a soundtrack chosen for them.

Seen with a designer’s eye, the restraint is deliberate and it works. There is no imported style statement here, no theme, just a timber and canvas bar reading against the grey cliffs and a foreground of that famous Drymades blue. The photographs from this end of the beach are the ones that look retouched and are not, because the water genuinely turns from turquoise to deep sapphire within a few strokes of the shore. If you want the coast at its most cinematic and least performed, this is the frame.

The offer is simple and priced kindly for the setting. Cocktails land at roughly six to ten euros, beer and coffee for a few coins more, and the kitchen runs to bar snacks rather than a full menu, so treat Amar as a place to drink and swim rather than to lunch at length. The loungers are few and come with a drink instead of a daybed fee, which keeps the whole thing informal, and the free public strip in front means you can just as easily throw down a towel and buy nothing until the sun drops.

The swimming is the quiet luxury. The pocket in front of Amar shelves more gently than the pebbly main beach, the visibility on a calm morning is exceptional, and the rocky edges either side reward a snorkel mask, with a sunken jet from the old regime resting on the seabed offshore for anyone who dives. Come in the last hour of daylight and the sequence writes itself: a swim in cooling water, a cocktail on the rocks, the cliffs going pink behind the mast lights.

Set expectations to match the place. The beach in front of Amar is a short rocky pocket, not a broad sweep, so a party of loungers is never the promise, and on the main Drymades stretch the water deepens quickly, which suits swimmers more than toddlers. The road down from the coastal highway is steep and narrow, parking is tight and fills before midday in August, and the sunset that makes this end so lovely also draws its own small crowd. If your day needs cushioned beds, table service and a scene, the Sanur Beach House and the busier clubs up the coast are the better fit. Come to Amar for calm, clear water and light, and it delivers exactly that.

Amar sits on the calmer tail of a beach that runs roughly 800 metres below the Ceraunian Mountains, a white pebble cove that the guides rate for some of the clearest water on the Riviera. The character shifts as you walk it: the social clubs and easy sand hold the centre, the rugged rock coves gather at the ends, and Amar marks the point where the crowd finally lets go. Amar is about 25 minutes north of Himara on the coastal highway and only 5 from Dhermi village, reached by a steep, narrow paved road that drops to the south end of the beach. Parking runs along the access road and in a few small lots, some free and some a couple of euros, and the spaces near this end go early on August mornings. Without a car, take a Himara to Vlora bus to Dhermi village and walk 15 to 20 minutes downhill, or hire a scooter for the day, which is the easiest way to reach the far end of the sand.
