Paje
by Night

The kite coast’s party address, seventy metres behind the sand.

The verdict

  • Book ifYou want the social headquarters of the southeast coast: a garden bar where the Monday Swahili buffet comes with a live band from 7 pm and the crowd walks in straight off the kite lagoon
  • Skip ifYou are two people chasing candlelit privacy, because pizza night, party night and a bar full of riders swapping wind stories make this a sociable address first and an intimate one a distant second
  • One thing to knowDrinks stay honest for a party institution: the island nightlife guide puts cocktails around 5 to 7 USD and beers at 3 to 4 USD, and the bar is free to walk into

Paje built its reputation on wind, and Paje by Night built its reputation on what happens after the wind dies at dusk. This is the longest standing party address on Zanzibar’s southeast coast, a bar, restaurant and nineteen bungalow hotel set in a green plot seventy metres inside the beach, with its own detached kite school, Hakuna Matata Kite, standing on the sand out front. The name was never an accident: for years, when anyone in the village asked where people were heading later, this was the answer.

The operation runs wider than the bar. There is a pool with a jacuzzi, a yoga studio, a small spa and a tours desk, and the bungalows sit in pairs around the garden with air conditioning and carved wood furniture. Within our Zanzibar club directory it holds the kite coast chair: the venue that turns a sporting beach into a scene once the boards are packed away for the evening.

The honest read

Sociable first, intimate second

The weekly rhythm is the whole personality. The hotel’s own site lists the Swahili buffet with a live band every Monday evening in high season, and island nightlife guides add the all you can eat pizza night on Thursdays and the bigger Friday party, with music swinging between reggae, Bongo Flava, Afrobeat and deep house depending on who has the decks. The crowd belongs to the lagoon: international riders, backpackers and Tanzanian locals arriving with salt still drying on them. Nobody dresses up and nobody needs to.

The kitchen is the quiet surprise. The restaurant runs a la carte with Italian hands at the ovens, so the wood fired pizza and the pasta are the real article, and the Swahili stews and seafood curries hold their own beside them. Prices sit mid range for the island, and the pizza night is the economical way to eat seriously well in Paje.

Now the part we owe couples, since that is the lens we bring. On its big nights this is a party with rooms attached: the bungalows sit in pairs, and an early Friday sleep before the music stops is optimistic. But the romance of Paje keeps different hours anyway. The light comes up over the lagoon at dawn on this coast, the low tide walks at first light stretch out long and empty, and a Monday buffet under the palms that closes by 10 pm makes a genuinely easy evening for two. If seclusion is the whole point of your trip, sleep up the shore in Bwejuu and come here for the pizza.

The garden behind the beach

Paje itself is the reason any of this exists. The sand runs white and wide, the lagoon drains to a walkable flat on the falling tide and refills into kite water on the push, and the trade winds arrive on a dependable schedule twice a year. Seaweed farms stripe the shallows and the village behind keeps more local life than the resort coasts up north. Our full Paje guide covers the tides, seasons and quieter stretches, and the Zanzibar watersports guide ranks the coast’s launch spots.

Getting there and booking

Finding it, booking it

Paje sits on the southeast coast, about an hour by road from Zanzibar City and the airport, and the hotel stands on the village side of the beach, a barefoot couple of minutes from the sand. Parking inside the plot is free. Rooms book through the online engine linked from the hotel site, reception answers on +255 652 431 100, and the bookings line on +255 772 635 066 also takes WhatsApp messages.

The bar and restaurant take walk ins, and nothing in our research points to a cover charge on ordinary nights, though event nights can differ, so treat that as to be confirmed. If you want the buffet, a table on a music night or a group evening arranged without the phone tag, send the date and party size through the form below and we will confirm that week’s programme with the hotel for you.

What guests ask us

What nights does Paje by Night have parties?

The hotel’s own site lists a Swahili buffet with live music every Monday from 7 to 10 pm in high season. Island nightlife guides add an all you can eat pizza night on Thursdays and a bigger party night on Fridays from about 7 pm. The programme moves with the season, so confirm the week you visit.

Is Paje by Night on the beach?

Almost. The bar, restaurant and bungalows sit in a garden plot about 70 metres inside the beach, and the hotel’s detached kite centre, Hakuna Matata Kite, stands on the beachfront itself. It is a barefoot walk of a couple of minutes from the sand to the bar.

How much are drinks at Paje by Night?

Mid range for the island rather than resort priced: the wearezanzibar nightlife guide puts cocktails at around 5 to 7 USD and beers at 3 to 4 USD. The venue publishes no drinks list online, so treat exact figures as to be confirmed.

Is Paje by Night good for couples?

For a fun night, yes. For a quiet one, choose your evening: the big party nights are loud and sociable, and the bungalows sit in pairs. The Monday buffet ends by 10 pm and makes an easy, unfussy evening for two, and dawn on this coast, when the light comes up over the lagoon, is the romantic hour. For real seclusion sleep in Bwejuu and visit.

Can you stay at Paje by Night?

Yes, it is a hotel as much as a bar: 19 air conditioned bungalows set in pairs around the garden, a pool with a jacuzzi, a yoga studio and a small spa. Check in is at 14:00 and check out at 10:00, and rooms book through the online engine linked from the hotel site.
