TopSea calls itself the first surfing centre in Israel and dates its story to 1956, when a visiting American doctor named Dorian Paskowitz paddled the country’s first board out at this end of the shore. Seventy years later the club still works the same sand below Independence Park, a shop above three breaks that are each within a three minute walk: Gordon with its sandy bottom for beginners, the Hilton reef that many locals call the best wave in Israel, and the club’s own reef peak in between.

The sand is public, the sea is free, and the club’s entire offer is a printed price list for boards, suits and teaching, which makes it the rare venue on this coast where you can budget the whole day before leaving the apartment.

Where 100 shekels goes furthest
Run the arithmetic and the club almost embarrasses the rest of the seafront. A whole day on a board costs 100 shekels, roughly what two drinks reach at the terraces ten minutes south, and the four class pack quietly cuts each Friday session from 250 to just under 198. Nothing here is quoted per date or held back for the front row. The price of the thing is written next to the thing, which on this stretch of the Mediterranean counts as a radical act.
The honesty extends to the sea itself. From June to August the club describes small daily waves between knee and head high, which is exactly the water a first timer wants and exactly when visitors are in town. The rest of the year swings from flat to double overhead with little warning, so do what the regulars do and check the live camera and wave forecast the club runs on its own site before you walk down with cash in hand.
Where it falls short is everything a beach club would sell you. There is no shade to hire, no kitchen of its own to linger in, and food and drink are the business of the bars and kiosks behind the beach rather than the shop. On a dead flat October day there is nothing here to rent your way out of, and the big winter reef days belong to surfers who already know what they are doing. Come for the water, budget the rest of the day elsewhere.

It sits below the greenery of Independence Park at the quiet end of the promenade, with the marina to the south and the city’s dog beach at its edge. Walk down, walk in
The club sits on the sand at Hilton Beach, reached down the paths from Independence Park or along the seafront promenade from Gordon, an easy walk from anywhere in the city centre. Driving is the hard way, the lots by the marina fill early on hot days, so treat this as the errand you do on foot with a towel over your shoulder.

The Friday adult beginner group class runs 8am to 10am and costs 250 shekels, with a pack of four classes at 790. A private hour is 250 shekels for one surfer and 150 for each additional person, taught in English on request. The club asks for at least 24 hours of notice for any class.
Do you need to book TopSea in advance?
Not for gear. The club’s own site says rentals need no call ahead, you simply walk in any day between 7am and sunset. Classes want 24 hours of notice, and the summer kids camps are signed up week by week.
Can a beginner surf in Tel Aviv?
Yes, and this is one of the friendlier cities to learn in. Gordon, three minutes from the club’s door, is a sandy bottomed break suited to first timers, and from June to August the sea delivers small waves almost daily. The Friday morning group class is the natural entry point.
