La La Land has held the sand at Gordon Beach since 2006, when a group of Tel Aviv nightlife veterans decided the city’s beach deserved better than plastic chairs and set low sofas and proper tables where the promenade meets the sand. Twenty years on it is still the name locals give first when a visitor asks where to eat on the beach, serving generous Israeli breakfasts through shawarma, grilled fish and steaks until long after dark, with the Mediterranean doing the lighting.

The tourist mistake is treating La La Land as a beach club and camping there all day, running a tab that climbs with every round of seafront priced drinks. The local move is to make it one deliberate meal, the big breakfast before the sand fills, or the long fish lunch, and to spend the rest of the day on the free beach ten steps away, where the city’s cheap loungers and cold water showers do everything a minimum spend does elsewhere.

The kitchen is broader than it needs to be, shawarma and kebabs beside pasta, pizza and whole fish, and the breakfasts are the sleeper value on the menu, generous Israeli spreads that arrive while the beach is still quiet. Reviewers consistently rate the setting above the cooking and the cooking above the bill, which is the honest order of things here. The wine list draws the most grumbles for markup, so the budget play is beer or the house pour with lunch and cocktails saved for one sunset round.

Where it falls short is pace and polish. Service runs on what regulars call beach speed, friendly but slow when the terrace packs out on summer weekends, and guests expecting crisp resort service leave frustrated. Nothing about that is hidden: the whole promise is an unhurried afternoon where the table is yours until you surrender it. If you want faster and cheaper, the kiosks along the promenade feed you for half the price with none of the view.

Gordon is the centre of Tel Aviv’s beach life, a broad band of golden sand between the marina and Frishman with lifeguard towers, outdoor gyms, volleyball courts and matkot paddles clacking from morning to dusk. The swimming is straightforward on calm days and watched by lifeguards in season, and the crowd is the city itself, families, runners, surfers and half the world’s backpackers. The address is 131 Herbert Samuel, the beachfront street below Ben Yehuda, a flat ten minute walk from Dizengoff Square and an easy stroll along the promenade from anywhere in the city centre.
