The verdict

Best for. Families and history minded visitors who want a sheltered cove with a rock pool, gentler than the long open beaches around it.

Best spot. The southern end near the rock pool and the headland, calmest for swimming and home to the surfing statue.

Know this. It is tucked between Queenscliff and Curl Curl, so it is smaller and more sheltered, but the centre still carries a rip when the swell is up.

The honest read

Freshwater is small, sheltered and quietly historic. Tucked into a cove between two headlands, it is gentler than the long open beaches on either side, which makes it a family favourite, but its real distinction is its place in the story of Australian surfing.

This is the beach where the sport took hold. The Hawaiian swimmer and surfer Duke Kahanamoku gave a celebrated surfing display here in the summer of 1914 and 1915, an event often credited with launching the surfing culture that now runs the length of the country. A statue of him stands on the headland above the sand.

The cove shape gives Freshwater a calmer character than its neighbours. The swell is softer, the beach is compact, and the rock pool at the southern end gives a sheltered swim that families rely on. It is an easy beach to settle at for a whole day with children.

The headland is the place to take it in. The walk up to the Duke statue rewards you with a view back over the cove and along the coast, and the dining at the top makes a long lunch easy without leaving the beach behind.

Who should skip it. If you want a big open sweep of sand and a long walk, Curl Curl or Manly nearby give you more room. But for a sheltered, friendly cove with a rock pool and a genuine slice of surfing history, Freshwater is hard to beat.

Freshwater, the northern beaches

Freshwater sits just north of Manly between Queenscliff and Curl Curl, around forty minutes from the city by car and easily combined with a Manly visit.

By public transport the ferry to Manly followed by a short bus or a walk along the coast is the scenic route, while buses also run direct from the city.

Facilities are good, with a surf club, a kiosk and headland dining. Use the southern rock pool for calm water and swim between the flags on the open sand.
