The verdict

Best for. Visitors who want a beach with everything close by, an ocean pool, a calm lagoon for small children and a strip of cafes along the front.

Best spot. The southern end by the ocean pool for swimming, and the northern lagoon for toddlers and birdlife.

Know this. It is one of the busier northern beaches with a real town behind it, so parking near the front fills on warm days and the surf carries rips.

The honest read

Dee Why is the workhorse of the northern beaches, the one with a proper town behind it and a beach that does a bit of everything. It is long and open, with a surf zone in the middle, an ocean pool to the south and a sheltered lagoon to the north, so most people find their patch quickly.

The dining strip along the front sets Dee Why apart from the quieter beaches. There is a genuine choice of cafes and restaurants looking straight onto the sand, which makes it an easy place to spend a whole day moving between the water and a long lunch without touching the car.

For swimming, the ocean pool at the southern end is the reliable choice, giving a flat swim whatever the surf is doing. The patrolled flags sit on the central sand, and the open beach carries rips when the swell is up, so the pool earns its keep on bigger days.

The northern lagoon is the family secret. Where the creek meets the sand the water lies shallow and calm, ideal for toddlers, and the reserve around it draws birdlife and picnic blankets. It is a gentler world a short walk from the surf.

Who should skip it. If you want a wild, empty beach, the quieter stretches up and down the coast suit better. But for a beach with an ocean pool, a calm lagoon and a real dining strip on the front, Dee Why is the most complete all rounder on this part of the coast.
