The Sri Lanka south coast runs on a single, decisive rhythm. From roughly December to April the sea is calm and clear, the surf is consistent and the whale boats run; from May to September the southwest monsoon turns the water rough and brings the rain. Get the season right and the coast is at its best; get it wrong and even the prettiest beach disappoints.
We have set out the year month by month below, with a quick season grid and honest notes on the months that matter. The headline is simple. The dry season from December to April is when you come for swimming, snorkeling, surfing and whale watching, with the deepest peak around the festive weeks.
If you take one line from this page, take this. Aim for December to March for the calmest sea and the best all round conditions, treat April as a hot, fine shoulder before the rains, and only choose the monsoon months if you want green season prices and do not mind a rougher sea.

When each month earns its place
December. The dry season returns in full and the coast comes alive. The sea settles into its calm clear winter state, the surf turns consistent and the whale boats begin their best run from Mirissa. Crowds build toward the festive peak, when prices are at their highest and the popular beaches are busy, so book ahead if you travel over the holidays.
February. Arguably the finest all round month. The sea is calm and clear, the weather is warm and dry and the surf is reliable, while the crowds ease just a little from the January peak. For swimming, snorkeling and whale watching together, February is hard to beat on the south coast.
April. The last of the dependable dry weather and the hottest month, fine for the beach but with the first afternoon showers hinting at the change to come. The sea is still warm and largely calm early in the month before the swell builds. A good shoulder choice for warm water and easier crowds before the monsoon.
July. Deep in the southwest monsoon, with a rough sea and frequent showers, though bright spells do break through. Swimming is best left to the reef protected lagoons like Polhena, and some surf spots still work for the committed. This is green season, when prices drop and the coast feels quiet and lush.
November. The turning point of the year. The monsoon eases, the sea begins to calm and clear and the beach businesses reopen for the season ahead. Crowds are still light early in the month, which makes late November a quietly rewarding time to arrive just before the December rush.

Before you go
What is the best time to visit the Sri Lanka south coast?
December to April is the dry season, with calm clear sea, reliable surf and whale watching, and it is the best window overall. December to March offers the most settled conditions, while April is hot and fine before the rains arrive. The southwest monsoon from May to September brings a rougher sea and showers.
When can you go whale watching from Mirissa?
Whale watching from Mirissa runs mostly from December to April, when the sea is calm enough for the boats to head out reliably. Early morning trips give the smoothest water and the best chances of blue whales and dolphins. The peak sightings tend to fall in the heart of the dry season around December to March.
Is the south coast worth visiting during the monsoon?
It can be, if you want green season prices, a quiet coast and lush scenery, and you do not mind a rougher sea and frequent showers. Swimming is safest in the reef protected lagoons like Polhena, and some surf still works. Just go in with realistic expectations, as the calm clear conditions belong to the dry season.
When is the surf best on the south coast?
The surf is most consistent through the dry season from roughly November to April, when the sea is cleaner and the swells are reliable. Beginners do best at Weligama, while confident surfers head to the reef breaks around Ahangama and Kabalana. Some spots keep working through the monsoon, but conditions are less dependable.
Which months are the least crowded?
The monsoon months from May to September are the quietest and cheapest, while the shoulder weeks in late November and early December and again in April offer a balance of decent weather and lighter crowds. The festive peak around late December and January is the busiest and priciest time of year.
