The Sri Lanka south coast is a surf coast at heart, and many of its famous beaches face open ocean swell that is wonderful for boards and tiring for small children. The good news is that a string of reef sheltered bays breaks up that coast, giving families calm, shallow, protected water within easy reach of the surf towns.
We have ranked the beaches below for a family day. Calm shallow water, soft sand, shade and food within reach and a gentle feel without a heavy current. We have leaned on the bays where a reef or a headland tames the swell, and we have been honest about which beautiful beaches are really for surfers rather than toddlers.
If you take one line from this page, take this. Base family days on the reef sheltered bays at Unawatuna and Polhena or the calm corner at Hiriketiya, save the open surf beaches for older children and lessons, and come in the south coast dry season for the calmest sea.
The family beaches worth your day
Calm shallow water first.
Unawatuna
The family standard of the south coast, a sheltered horseshoe bay where a reef and headlands soften the swell into calm, shallow water. The sand is soft, the shallows are gentle and a wall of cafes and guesthouses sits right behind the beach, so a day with children needs little planning. Busy and developed, but easy and protected.
Polhena
A reef ringed lagoon near Matara with some of the calmest, shallowest water on the coast, where the offshore reef holds back the swell and creates a natural pool. It is a local favourite for gentle swimming and easy snorkelling, with simple services nearby. One of the safest feeling spots for young children when the sea elsewhere is up.
Hiriketiya
A small horseshoe bay with a calm, protected inner corner that suits paddling and a gentle swim, while the centre of the bay has a mellow wave for older children to learn on. The boho cafe scene behind the sand makes for easy lunches. A rare beach that works for both toddlers in the corner and beginner surfers in the middle.
Mirissa
A wide crescent with a livelier scene, calmer at its sheltered western end where families gather while surf and boats work the rest of the bay. There is plenty of sand, lots of cafes and the famous whale watching boats leave from here in season. Good for an active family base, though the open parts have real swell.
Bentota
A long resort beach with calm watersports on the river lagoon behind the sand, which is gentler than the open sea for younger children. The wide beach and the river give families options, and the smarter hotels make an easy base. The ocean side can have swell, so the lagoon is the calm choice on a rough day.
The honest read for families
The south coast is a surf coast, and that is the single most important thing for families to understand. Beaches like Weligama, Ahangama and Midigama are superb for boards and beginners but face open swell that tires small children quickly. The family beaches are the exceptions, the bays where a reef or a headland holds back the sea, and they are worth seeking out.
Season decides the rest. The south coast dry season runs roughly from December to March or April, when the sea is at its calmest and clearest, while the southwest monsoon from May to September pushes a bigger, rougher swell along the coast. The reef sheltered bays stay the calmest option even when the open beaches are working, but timing still helps a great deal.
A few honest cautions. Even the sheltered bays can have currents and rip channels where the reef gaps, lifeguard cover is patchy and not every beach is patrolled, and conditions are typical rather than guaranteed. Watch the water before letting children in, keep to the calm corners and shallows, mind the strong tropical sun, and ask locally about the safe spot on the day.
A base for the family day
A cafe or a club with loungers makes a family day far easier here, with shade, somewhere to leave your things and food a few steps from the sand. Unawatuna and Mirissa have the most family friendly cafe scenes right behind the beach, while the quieter bays keep things simple. We never invent a venue, a minimum spend or an opening status, so anything unconfirmed is marked to be confirmed. Browse the directory and send one enquiry to check your date.

Before you go
Which south coast beaches are best for families?
The reef sheltered bays are the family choice. Unawatuna has a calm horseshoe bay with gentle shallows and services on the sand, Polhena near Matara has a reef ringed lagoon that is one of the calmest spots on the coast, and the corner of Hiriketiya bay is gentle for paddling. These tame the swell that makes much of the coast a surf beach.
Is the sea safe for children on the south coast?
In the reef sheltered bays during the dry season the water is at its calmest and shallowest, which suits children, but the south coast is an open swell coast and even sheltered bays can have currents where the reef gaps. Lifeguard cover is patchy, conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, so watch the water and keep children in the calm corners.
When should families visit the south coast?
The south coast dry season from roughly December to March or April is best for families, with the calmest, clearest sea and the most reliable weather. The southwest monsoon from May to September brings a bigger swell and rougher water, though the reef sheltered bays stay the calmest option. Aim for the dry months for the gentlest swimming.
Are the south coast beaches good for toddlers?
The calmest bays are. Polhena lagoon and the sheltered corner of Unawatuna give toddlers shallow, protected water in the dry season, and Hiriketiya has a gentle inner corner. Avoid the open surf beaches like Weligama and Ahangama with very young children, since the swell there suits boards rather than paddling. Always watch the water first.
Do south coast family beaches have food and shade?
Yes. Unawatuna and Mirissa have walls of cafes and guesthouses right behind the sand with shade, loungers and easy food, and the quieter bays have simple places nearby. Prices vary and the smarter spots can be pricey, which we mark as to be confirmed, but you will not be short of a shady lunch near the water.
