Polhena is the south coast beach you send people to when they want to actually swim. Just west of Matara, it sits behind an offshore reef that knocks the ocean flat, leaving a shallow, clear lagoon that is about as gentle as sea swimming gets on this stretch of coast. Where the open beaches carry shore break and currents, Polhena gives you waist deep water you can stand in and wander through, which makes it a favourite with families and anyone who finds the open coast intimidating.
The reef does more than calm the water. On a clear day the lagoon is a snorkeling spot in its own right, with small fish over the coral and the genuine chance of seeing turtles that feed in the shallows offshore. It is local and unpolished rather than glossy, with guest houses and small cafes close behind the sand rather than resorts, and that neighbourhood feel is part of why regulars are fond of it.
The honest note is that calm is not the same as featureless. The reef that makes Polhena safe also means shallow rock and coral underfoot, so water shoes are wise and the tide matters, with more water over the reef and easier swimming at higher tide. Visibility and conditions drop in the monsoon, and you should never stand on or touch the reef. Treat it as a gentle lagoon with rules rather than an empty pool, and it is one of the most useful, family friendly beaches on the coast.
