Koukounaries is the image most people already hold in their head when they think of Skiathos: a long arc of fine blond sand, a protected pine forest pressing almost to the tide line, and the Strofilia wetland lying quiet behind the trees. Xenia Beach Bar stands where the path around that lake reaches the shore, and it inherits its name from the state built Xenia hotel that has looked over this sand since the 1960s, lately rebuilt as part of the five star estate that runs the organised rows here.

We read every entry on the Skiathos club directory the way a photographer reads a location: what the frame flatters, what gets cropped out, and where the light actually falls. Xenia is the sharpest lesson on the island. The scenery behind it belongs among the best beach compositions in Greece, while the bar itself is a plain service building with a pergola terrace, a gyros grill and plastic cups. Neither fact cancels the other. You simply need to know that the postcard and the till receipt describe two different things sharing one address.

Stand waist deep in the shallows and look back at the land, and you understand every brochure Skiathos has ever printed: an unbroken green wall of pines above pale sand, no concrete in the frame, the composition doing everything a designer could ask. That is also where the photos lie, because they are nearly all taken facing the shore. Turn the camera around and Xenia reveals itself as a tidy kiosk with a pergola, closer in spirit to a well run canteen than to the sculpted lounges of Mykonos. Reviewers photograph their pitas here, not the architecture, and they are right to.

The hour matters more than the lounger. Doors open at 9, and for the first stretch of the morning the arc is close to empty, the light is still low and warm on the trunks, and a coffee under the pergola feels like having the island’s best beach as a private commission. By early afternoon in August the sand runs at full capacity and the queue at the counter grows teeth. Come early or come for the last hours, when the sun drops toward the western headland and the pine wall goes gold; the middle of the day is when Koukounaries belongs to everyone else.

Where it falls short is consistent across the review pile and worth taking at face value. A small draft beer has been billed at 6 and even 8 euro and lands in a plastic cup, a September 2025 visitor described litter around the terrace and staff slow to look up, and the card terminal has been reported out of action, which makes cash the safer pocket. The public review average sits below three stars, and for a bar holding the island’s finest beach that gap between setting and service is the single most useful fact on this page.

The beach itself is the reason this page exists. The sand is unusually fine, the water shelves so gently that the shallows run out for a remarkable distance, and the whole arc sits inside a protected landscape where the Strofilia lake and its reed beds fill the ground behind the trees. The island bus runs the whole south coast and ends its route at Koukounaries, roughly half an hour from Skiathos Town, leaving only a short walk to the sand. Drivers park by the main road behind the beach because nothing drives closer, and in summer the taxi boats from the old port call here too. The bar announces itself where the lake path opens onto the shore, with the organised lounger rows spreading either side of it.

Beds are claimed in person on the day, and the front line facing the water is gone by late morning through July and August. No booking system exists in public, which is an odd gap for a resort run operation on a flagship beach.
