Big Banana is where Skiathos keeps its energy, a long bend of pale sand over the headland from Koukounaries, and Nest is the bar on it that refuses to shout. It holds the calmer stretch of the crescent with thick padded loungers, music kept low on purpose, and a list that runs from morning coffee through cocktails to light snacks, all operated by the five star resort whose grounds you cross on the way in. Doors open at 9, earlier than anything else on this sand, which suits anyone who likes the famous beach before the volume arrives.

Our test for every entry on the Skiathos club directory is a pair of questions: what does the paid day really cost, and how good is the free version within sight of it. Nest gives an awkward answer to the first, because no current price exists in public, and a generous answer to the second, because the law of this island keeps all of its sand open to everyone.

What Nest actually sells is a slice of a five star operation to people who never checked in. The mattresses are the deep, sofa like sets the hotel lays out for its own guests, service comes to the lounger, and the snack list means lunch never requires shoes. That is a real product, and on a windless July morning with a freddo espresso arriving at your elbow it feels like money well spent. The catch is that you cannot know how much money until you are standing on the sand, because the operator publishes nothing, and the one figure in circulation, about 24 euro for a double set, was reported by visitors back in 2022.

The free alternative here is better than almost anywhere we rank. Island rules keep every metre of Skiathos shoreline public, and the southern end of this same crescent stays wild, with pine shade behind it where a towel costs exactly nothing. Reviewers who skipped the beds found space under the trees even in high summer, and the sea in front of the free sand is the same clear, gently shelving water the loungers face. Five minutes of walking lets you price the difference with your own eyes before a euro leaves your pocket.

Where the value case wobbles is the sense of visiting somebody else’s hotel. The approach runs through resort grounds for roughly 800 metres from the road, reviewers have complained about paying for beds even while spending at the restaurant, and one 2022 account called the food and service at the bar plainly poor, a one off worth knowing about rather than a pattern we can confirm. And if you came to Banana for the party, this is the wrong end of it: the tempo lives up the sand at Bananarama and over the rocks at Black Bird, both louder, younger and prouder of it.

The crescent itself earns its reputation: fine pale sand between two green arms, water that stays clear and shallow for a long way out, and enough length that the loud middle and the wild south feel like different beaches. Water sports run from the busier stretch, snorkellers work the rocks at either end, and the pocket cove of Little Banana hides behind the southern arm. Take the island bus to stop 26, the Koukounaries terminus about twelve kilometres from Skiathos Town, cross to the car park, and follow the resort road uphill for roughly 800 metres until it delivers you to the sand. Old signage to Banana has largely gone, so trust the road through the grounds rather than hunting for arrows. Summer taxi boats from the old port call at Koukounaries and leave you the identical walk, and drivers should park at Koukounaries because nothing closer exists.
