Lido La Pigna

Ride the cable car down from Taormina and Lido La Pigna is waiting almost at the bottom station, its umbrella rows spread over the pebbles of Mazzarò bay at Via Mazzarò. This is a lido in the old Sicilian sense rather than a club in the Ibiza sense: a working kitchen with a sea view terrace, changing cabins, showers, an info point that can put you on a boat or a paddleboard, and staff who treat the walk from grill to lounger as part of the service.

Among the Taormina entries on our Sicily club directory, La Pigna is the one we point at when someone asks where ordinary people actually spend the day. It draws hotel guests, day trippers off the funivia and local families in roughly equal parts, and its food ambitions run from a proper swordfish roulade all the way down, gloriously, to a maxi toast with tabasco and mayonnaise.

The day here is built around eating, and it starts earlier than most lidos bother with. From 9 the bar does a real Sicilian breakfast, homemade granita in strawberry, almond, coffee and lemon with a brioche to tear into it, plus cappuccino in whatever milk you argue for. At noon the terrace kitchen takes over with potted mussels, spaghetti with fresh clams, and a grilled swordfish roulade rolled in breadcrumbs, parsley, garlic and parmesan. Too comfortable to move? Order the pizza Norma or the fried fish to your lounger, the staff carry it down on a tray, and the lido makes a point of saying the tray costs nothing.

The scene is the honest, unglossy version of Taormina beach life. The funivia lands its first waves from town by late morning, and the guides are blunt that unreserved beds are back row territory after 11. The crowd is mixed in the best way, families around the shallows, couples off the cable car, regulars who greet the staff by name, and the soundtrack is conversation over stones and water rather than a DJ. Around 4 the granita counter gets its second rush, the bar shifts to passion fruit mojitos and its Etna Negroni built from Sicilian bitter, gin and vermouth, and by 6 the whole operation folds its umbrellas.

The shortfalls are worth naming. Nothing official is published on price, so the numbers above are traveler reports rather than a tariff, and Taormina rates sting in August regardless. The beach is pebble, not sand, so water shoes save the walk in. Sunset is not on the menu, the 6pm close sees to that. Mazzarò is the workaday twin of its famous neighbor: a sheltered pebble crescent where the water turns glassy over pale stones and small boats swing at anchor in the middle distance. Skip the car if you can. The funivia drops from the east end of Taormina’s Corso Umberto to Mazzarò in a few scenic minutes and the lido is a short walk from the bottom station, which matters on a coast where summer parking is a blood sport. Drivers should arrive early or expect to hunt.
