Lido La Caravella

Every resort town keeps one establishment where the service model predates the smartphone, and in Taormina it is La Caravella. The lido describes its own staff as working like the old hotel concierges, the doormen you could ask for anything, and the description survives contact with reality: a van collects you from your hotel, a bed is waiting with the umbrella already cranked, a glass of champagne can land beside you on the shingle, and the same van takes you back up the mountain in time to change for dinner. In a town where the cable car queue is a rite of passage, being chauffeured to the water is a genuine flex.

Within our Sicily club directory it fills a slot nothing else does: less money than the grand hotel lidos on the bay, more looked after than the row of municipal umbrellas, and the only one whose location most first timers get wrong. The marketing says Isola Bella. The map says Spisone, the calmer ribbon of shore north of Mazzaro, and that quiet mislabel is the best thing about it.

The kitchen sets the day’s shape. This is a fish restaurant that happens to rent beds, not the other way round, and the plates guests carry home in memory are specific: lobster over linguine, dentice stewed in umido, whatever came off the boats matched to a cold Sicilian white. Orders travel from the terrace to the beds, so the classic Caravella afternoon is horizontal, a long lunch eaten with the bay in view and Etna occasionally smoking over your shoulder. Reviewers who arrived expecting a snack bar leave writing about the food, which tells you where the effort goes.

The scene is hosted rather than staged. Dominic, the padrone guests greet by name in review after review, runs the floor with a small crew, and the atmosphere follows him: families and couples, mostly return visitors, nobody performing for a camera. There is no DJ and no evening bar programme, the day winds down as the light goes flat around seven, and by night the lido is silent unless someone has arranged a shore table or taken the whole place for a party, both of which it will happily do. If you want music with your swim, this is the wrong booking and we would rather tell you now.

The candour list is short but real. The waterline is shingle giving way to rocks and boulders, and getting in is an undignified scramble without water shoes, several guests mention slipping. Towels have cost extra in some seasons’ packages and not others, so ask what your rate includes. And because nothing is published, from season dates to bed prices, the whole operation runs on a phone call, charming in person and mildly maddening from abroad.

Spisone is what Taormina Mare looks like when the tour groups thin out: a straight run of dark shingle, water that goes glassy by mid morning, and hotels rather than hawkers at your back. Guests rate it precisely because it is not the famous cove, there is space at noon in July here that Isola Bella loses by half past nine. The elegant answer is to let the lido come to you: phone ahead and the free van collects you at your Taormina hotel and returns you when you wave the flag, a service guests describe as punctual to the minute. Under your own steam, take the cable car from town down to Mazzaro and walk the coast road north past the headland, or drive the Catania Messina coastal road and park along the Spisone access, tighter in August than the lido’s own logistics.
