A beach club usually rents you a lounger and hopes the view earns its keep. The Antico Stabilimento Balneare inverts that arrangement entirely: here the building is the view. Raised on pilings over the shallows of Mondello and inaugurated in 1913, this is one of the finest Liberty era buildings in Europe, a confection of turrets, spires and polychrome decoration built for the Belgian backed company that grew into Mondello Immobiliare Italo Belga. Two long wings run out from the central pavilion, holding rows of historic stone cabins, and the terraces reach over the water toward the bay.

Our honest position, the same one we take across the Sicily beach clubs directory, is that Sicily rewards setting and service far more than it rewards the DJ. Nowhere on the island states that more plainly than here, where the establishment you rent a bed from is itself a monument. You are not paying for exclusivity. You are paying to spend a day inside a landmark.

The building is the whole argument. You walk out over the water on a platform that has stood since before the first world war, past the stone cabins and under the painted timberwork, and the ordinary business of renting a sunbed acquires a sense of occasion that no modern club can manufacture. The pleasure here is quiet and architectural, a coffee on a terrace above the shallows, the fortress bulk of Monte Pellegrino closing one end of the bay, the light coming off the sand. It rewards the traveller who slows down and looks up.

What it is not is private. Mondello is Palermo’s city beach, and on a warm weekend it fills with families and day trippers from town, so the mood on the sand is sociable and busy rather than hushed and exclusive. The establishment gives you order and comfort within that: a marked row, service to the lounger, the cabins, the terraces. But a free public stretch of the same white sand runs right beside the paid rows, and it is worth being clear eyed that the premium here buys heritage and ease, not seclusion.

The table is the other reason to come. The terraces house the Alle Terrazze restaurant, carrying the name of the storied Charleston that took over the interior decades ago, and a Sicilian lunch or dinner over the bay is an experience in its own right, quite apart from any sunbed. Where it falls short is predictable: the loungers can feel dear for what is, at heart, a public bay, and anyone after a contemporary beach club scene with a pool and a DJ has come to the wrong century. That is precisely the point of the place.

Mondello is the bay that Palermo escapes to, a crescent of fine white sand and shallow, unusually clear water tucked between the headlands of Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo about eleven kilometres north of the city. The establishment sits at its centre, but the shore stretches well beyond it, with free public sand, small kiosks and a promenade that fills on summer evenings. Mondello is an easy trip from Palermo, about eleven kilometres and twenty to thirty minutes by car, with city buses running out to the bay through the summer, so a car is a convenience rather than a necessity and parking is the usual scramble on a hot weekend. Booking splits in two. A table at the Alle Terrazze restaurant on the terraces goes through its own site and is worth securing ahead in July and August, while a sunbed on the sand is more a matter of arriving and taking what is free, easiest early in the day or midweek before the Palermo crowds arrive.
