Playacar is the calm, comfortable counterpoint to central Playa del Carmen. Running south of the ferry pier in front of a gated resort and residential community, it trades the buzz of the town beaches for a wider, quieter stretch of soft sand and water that usually sits calmer than the open beaches up in Cancun.
Because it fronts a controlled neighbourhood, Playacar feels orderly and peaceful. There is a rule against loud speakers and instruments through much of it, which keeps the atmosphere restful, and the broad sand is often dotted with shells, a small but real pleasure for children combing the tideline.
The sand is public, as everywhere in Mexico, but access takes a little knowing. The simplest open entries are by the ferry pier and a handful of marked beach paths, while the loungers and palapas you pass mostly belong to the resorts behind. Bring your own kit and you can settle on the public sand with the town only a short walk away.
Come to Playacar for a calm swim and a quiet day within walking distance of Playa del Carmen, then wander north for food and shops when you want them. For livelier sand head to the Mamitas beach club scene, for a free local favourite try Punta Esmeralda, and for verified beach clubs and minimum spend bands use our Riviera Maya beach clubs directory.
Playacar fronts a gated resort area, and we never invent venues, prices or status. Access points and any beach clubs vary, so we mark what we cannot confirm as to be confirmed. For verified beach clubs and minimum spend bands, use the Riviera Maya beach clubs directory.
The open sand near the ferry pier is the simplest free way onto the Playacar stretch, with the town and its services just behind.
South along the beach the loungers and palapas belong to the hotels of the Playacar community rather than a public club on the sand. We confirm any venue before listing it.
Playacar lies just south of the ferry pier in Playa del Carmen, an easy walk from Fifth Avenue and the town centre, and a short taxi or drive from the highway. The clearest public access is by the pier, with further marked beach paths threading between the resorts.
Bring your own loungers, water and sun cover, since service on the public sand is limited. Check the posted flag before swimming, keep within your depth, and remember the calm conditions here are typical rather than guaranteed.

Send your details and we will help arrange a beach club or daybed booking near Playacar Beach and along the Riviera Maya coast. We confirm current minimum spend and availability with the venue before you commit. Nothing is charged here.
