Ras Al Khaimah has one of the gentlest coastlines in the region for a swim. The Arabian Gulf runs warm, shallow and mostly flat here, sheltered further by Al Marjan Island and the mangrove lagoons, so the water rarely turns rough on a typical day. For a calm, unhurried swim this is a kind shore, and the only real question is which beach gives you the most shelter, the softest entry and a little shade for the hours either side.

Below we rank the calmest swimming beaches in Ras Al Khaimah on the flatness of the water, the gentleness of the entry and the shelter of the bay, with a note on shade and lifeguards. We are honest about which charge a day pass and which are free, and we never promise safety, because conditions are always typical rather than guaranteed. Watch children closely and follow the lifeguard signs wherever they fly.

Mina Al Arab

The most sheltered swim on the coast, a resort and lagoon shore tucked behind the mangroves that stays glassy and calm on most days. Soft sand, a gentle entry and the easy adventure of a kayak among the flamingos make it the first choice for flat water.

The honest read

Which calm beach for which swimmer

A few honest pointers. For the flattest, most sheltered water, the Mina Al Arab lagoon and the Al Marjan shore are hard to beat, tucked behind the mangroves and the island and rarely ruffled. For a calm swim with the most service the Al Hamra resorts add shade and dining, while the free Flamingo and Marjan Public stretches trade a little of that shelter for soft sand and no day pass at all.

Plan around shade and heat rather than waves. The Gulf stays gentle, but the open sand offers little cover, so bring an umbrella, aim for the early morning or the soft evening hours, and treat the fierce summer from June to September with care. The cool months from November to April are when a calm Ras Al Khaimah swim is at its easy, glassy best.

The Gulf here is shallow and gentle for a long way out on a typical day, which makes it forgiving and easy for a calm swim, and the sheltered island and lagoon beaches are flatter still.
