Samsara opened on Baia Verde in 2006 and effectively wrote the template every Gallipoli party lido has copied since: beds and umbrellas by day, a bar that never quite closes, and a programme of DJ sets that converts the whole establishment into a dance floor as the light goes gold. Twenty seasons on it is still the name people mean when they say they are going to Gallipoli for the summer, and its aperitivo hour has become a small institution of its own, complete with the fruit skewers that circulate through the crowd.

What the money buys here is worth stating plainly, because it is the opposite of the usual club arithmetic. The spend is small and the exclusivity is nil. There is no velvet rope on the sand, the free beach runs right alongside, and on the big August nights the crowd from the whole strip gravitates here whether they rented a bed or not. You are not buying separation from the scene, you are buying a reserved seat inside it, plus quick service while it builds.

Where it falls short is a matter of temperament rather than execution. The morning booking deadline is unsentimental, arrive late in August and your reserved bed has reportedly gone to the queue. The bar leans on cocktails and snacks rather than a serious kitchen, so plan lunch as fuel rather than as the event. And quiet is simply not on the menu at any price. Baia Verde is the strip that turned Gallipoli from a fishing town with a pretty old quarter into a summer capital, a long run of fine pale sand backed by low dunes, with lido after lido facing typically calm, shallow Ionian water. Free public stretches thread between the paid rows, and the further south you walk the wilder it gets, ending in the protected pines of Punta Pizzo.
