Oludeniz Beach is one of the most photographed shores in Turkey, but the famous name hides a useful truth, it is really two beaches in one bay. There is the long open strand at Belcekiz, lively and free, where the sea breaks and the paragliders land, and behind it the still turquoise lagoon, calm and warm but inside a paid nature park. Knowing the difference is the key to a good day here.
For value the bay is generous if you read it right. The open beach is free public shingle, so a full day of swimming, sunbathing and paraglider watching costs nothing unless you choose to hire a lounger. The lagoon is the paid upgrade, a small per person fee for the calmest, warmest, most sheltered water, which is money well spent with young children but optional for everyone else.
The honest framing is to pick your side by the day you want. Choose the free open beach for buzz, convenience and a refreshing swim in the heart of the resort, and accept shingle and waves. Choose the paid lagoon for calm, warmth and the postcard view, and accept the fee and basic facilities. For the detail on each, our separate guides to Belcekiz and the Blue Lagoon go deeper.
The bay mixes a free public beach, a protected lagoon and a row of beachfront bars rather than one club. We describe each honestly and route enquiries through our directory, never inventing venues or fees.
The open beach is backed by a row of independent bars and hotel clubs hiring loungers and umbrellas on the lively free shore. Verdict: an easy serviced day in the heart of the resort, optional since the public shingle is free, with charges set by each venue and to be confirmed.
A private Blue Flag beach club on the sand in the lagoon area, with loungers, a kitchen and calm swimming, the comfortable choice on the sheltered side of the bay. Verdict: a relaxed serviced day beside the calm water, so confirm any day entry and lounger charge before you go.
Oludeniz sits about fourteen kilometres south of Fethiye, reached by the frequent dolmus minibus in around half an hour or by taxi and transfer from Dalaman airport. The open beach runs along the front of the village, and the lagoon is a short walk south at the end of the bay, where the park fee is paid at the gate.
Parking near the seafront is limited in high summer, so the dolmus is usually the easier choice. Bring water shoes for the shingle on both shores, plenty of sun cover, and decide as you go which side suits the day, the free lively beach or the calm paid lagoon, since they sit only a short walk apart.
Tell us your date and party and we will point you to the right beach club style venues at Oludeniz and the wider Fethiye coast, from the calm lagoon side to the lively open beach. No charge to enquire.
Partly. The long open beach at Belcekiz is free public shingle, so you can swim and sunbathe at no cost. The calm Blue Lagoon behind it sits in a protected nature park with a small per person fee. So the same famous bay offers both a free beach and a paid one.
They are two parts of the same bay. The open beach at Belcekiz is free, lively and faces the sea with waves, while the Blue Lagoon is a calm, warm, sheltered pool behind a sand spit inside a paid nature park. Families often prefer the lagoon, value seekers the free beach.
Not really. The open beach is grey shingle and pebble, and the lagoon is reached across a spit of sand and fine shingle, so neither is soft powder. Water shoes make both shores far more comfortable to walk in and out of the water.
Yes, especially the lagoon side, where the water is calm, warm and shallow behind the spit. The open beach is livelier with waves and is fine for stronger swimmers and for watching the paragliders. Lifeguard cover is seasonal and not guaranteed, so supervise children.
It is famous for the postcard view of the turquoise lagoon set against pine hills, and for being one of the top tandem paragliding spots in the world, with flights launching from Babadag and landing on the beach. The mix of calm lagoon, open sea and mountain backdrop is the draw.
