Waimea Bay Oahu
Best for. Summer swimmers and snorkellers who want one of the prettiest bays on Oahu, plus winter wave watchers.
Best spot. The deep sand near the famous jump rock on the right side of the bay, when the water is calm in summer.
Know this. In winter Waimea hosts giant surf and dangerous currents, so the calm bay is a summer experience.
Waimea is the showpiece of the North Shore, a deep horseshoe bay framed by green headlands with water that turns an unreal turquoise in summer. On a calm warm morning it is one of the most beautiful swimming beaches in the whole state, and the snorkelling along the rocks is genuinely good.
The famous jump rock on the right side draws a queue of nerve testers all summer. It is a thrill, and it is also where injuries happen when people jump without checking depth and conditions. Watch the locals, follow the lifeguards, and never jump if the water is moving.
In winter Waimea becomes something else entirely. This is the home of the Eddie Aikau big wave invitational, which only runs when the surf is enormous. The waves and the currents in that season are no place for swimming, and the shorebreak alone is severe. Come to watch, stay on the sand.
Parking is the real test here. The beach park lot is small and fills painfully early on summer mornings, and the roadside overflow stretches along the highway. The trick is the same as the surfers use. Arrive early or come late in the afternoon.
Who should skip it. In peak summer the bay can feel packed, so if you want quiet, go midweek or early. In winter do not bring small children expecting a swim. The windward beaches stay calm when Waimea is roaring.
Clubs on this beach
Waimea is a public bay with no club on the sand, so we point you to the Oahu beaches where a club day exists.
No beach club on this beach
This is public Hawaiian sand with no daybed club on the beach itself. For a club style day with loungers and table service on Oahu you book at the Waikiki and Ko Olina resort beaches, which we gather in the Oahu beach clubs directory.
North Shore, Oahu
Waimea Bay Beach Park is on Kamehameha Highway just south of Pupukea and Sharks Cove, about an hour from Waikiki by the H1 and H2 freeways and the coast road. The bay is impossible to miss from the highway.
The lot is small and gates can close when it is full, so most summer visitors arrive early or use the roadside overflow and walk in. Do not block driveways in the neighbourhood.
Restrooms and showers are at the park. Haleiwa town a few minutes south has cafes, shave ice and shops for anything you forgot to pack.

Common questions about Waimea Bay
Is Waimea Bay safe for swimming?
In the calm summer months it is a beautiful swimming and snorkelling bay. In winter it hosts giant surf and strong currents and is not safe to swim, so check the season and the lifeguard signs before you enter.
Can you still jump off the rock at Waimea Bay?
People jump from the rock on the right side of the bay in calm summer conditions. It causes injuries every year, so check the depth, watch others first, and never jump when the water is moving.
When does the Eddie Aikau run at Waimea Bay?
The Eddie Aikau invitational only runs when winter surf is big enough, which does not happen every year. The window is the winter season and the call is made only days ahead.
Is there parking at Waimea Bay?
There is a small beach park lot plus roadside overflow on the highway. It fills very early on summer mornings, so an early or late arrival is the reliable plan.
Is Waimea Bay good for families?
On calm summer days it is excellent for families who can swim, with clear water and a wide beach. In winter the surf is dangerous, so families seeking calm water should choose a windward beach instead.
