Alii Beach in Haleiwa, Oahu
Best for. Families and first time North Shore visitors who want a base with shade, parking and Haleiwa town next door.
Best spot. The grassy fringe near the lifeguard tower, an easy walk from the lot, with shade behind the sand.
Know this. Winter brings surf contests and bigger waves here too, so check conditions before letting children in.
Alii Beach is the sensible North Shore base that the famous breaks are not. Sitting right beside Haleiwa town, Haleiwa Alii Beach Park has a generous lot, shade trees, a lawn and restrooms, which makes it the easiest place on this coast to set up with children for the day.
The water here is gentler than at Pipeline or Sunset, especially in summer, and the park is a known spot for Hawaiian green sea turtles that rest near the sand. Volunteers often rope off resting turtles, and watching them is a quiet highlight for families.
Be honest about the season though. This is still the North Shore, and winter brings bigger surf and local contests to Alii as well. On a big day the shorebreak is not for small children, so check the lifeguard signs and pick your moment.
The real advantage is the location. You can swim, then walk or drive two minutes into Haleiwa for shave ice, coffee, food trucks and shops. That mix of beach plus town makes Alii the most practical stop on a North Shore day trip.
Who should skip it. If you came for the postcard turquoise of Waimea or the spectacle of Pipeline, Alii will feel ordinary by comparison. Treat it as the comfortable base camp rather than the headline beach.
Clubs on this beach
Alii is a public beach park with no club on the sand, so we route you to the Oahu beaches where a club day exists.
No beach club on this beach
This is public Hawaiian sand with no daybed club on the beach itself. For a club style day with loungers and table service on Oahu you book at the Waikiki and Ko Olina resort beaches, which we gather in the Oahu beach clubs directory.
Haleiwa, Oahu
Haleiwa Alii Beach Park is on the edge of Haleiwa town on the North Shore, about fifty minutes from Waikiki by the H1 and H2 freeways and then the coast road. It is the gateway beach as you reach the North Shore.
Parking is easier here than at the surf breaks, with a proper lot beside the park. Even so, weekends and contest days get busy, so an earlier arrival still helps.
Restrooms, showers and shade are on site, and Haleiwa town is a two minute hop for food trucks, shave ice and supplies. It makes a natural lunch and base point for exploring the coast.
