Muscat rewards a traveller who likes to be on the water rather than beside it. The protected coves and khors south of the city hold clear water and reef for snorkelling and diving, the sheltered bays suit kayaking and paddling, and the marinas give easy access for sailing and boat trips along a dramatic coast. The calm, clear sea and the rugged setting make this one of the finest stretches in the region for gentle, exploratory water sport.
Below we rank the best beaches and coves for watersports in Muscat on the snorkelling and diving, the shelter for paddling and kayaking, and the access for boats and sailing. We are honest about which need a boat or an operator and which you can launch from yourself, and we never promise safety, because conditions are typical rather than guaranteed. Agree any operator, route and fare before you set off.
Ranked for watersports
Scored on the snorkelling and diving, the shelter for paddling and kayaking, and the access for boats and sailing.
Bandar Khayran
The finest water playground near the city, a protected maze of coves and reef for snorkelling, diving and kayaking in glassy, sheltered water. Reached by boat from Qantab or the marina, with operators running trips whose prices and departures are to be confirmed.
Qantab Beach
The traditional launch point for boat trips, where local fishermen run dolphin watching and snorkelling runs into Bandar Khayran and along the cliffs. The cove swim is modest, but as a base for getting on the water it is the heart of the action.
Bandar Jissah Beach
A sheltered cliff cove with calm, clear water and rock arches, lovely for an easy snorkel and a gentle paddle close to shore. Kayaks and snorkel trips run from the bay, and the protected water suits beginners and a quiet morning on the surface.
Al Mouj Beach
A polished marina with calm water and easy access for sailing, paddling and stand up paddle, with the harbour and operators close at hand. The most convenient base for getting on the water without a long drive, and gentle enough for a first try.
Yiti Beach
An open, breezy sweep with tidal lagoons that can suit paddling and, on windier days, draw those who chase the breeze. Facilities and operators are minimal and to be confirmed, so this is a spot for the self sufficient and well prepared.
Qurum Beach
The long, calm city crescent is gentle enough for an easy paddle or a relaxed swim, a soft introduction to the water for families and beginners. Not a serious watersports base, but central, calm and easy for a low key session close to town.
Which water for which activity
A few honest pointers. For snorkelling, diving and kayaking, the protected coves of Bandar Khayran are the clear first choice, reached by boat for clear, sheltered water and reef. Qantab is the working launch point that gets you out there, while Bandar Jissah offers an easier, calmer snorkel and paddle you can enjoy without going far offshore.
For sailing, paddling and an easy start on the water, the calm marina at Al Mouj is the most convenient base near the city. Skip Kalbuh Bay for watersports, since it is a harbour park for strolling and views rather than swimming or paddling. Many of the best trips run by boat, so operators, prices and seasons change and are to be confirmed, and the cool months from October to April are the clearest and calmest.
