Portonovi
Beach Club
Rare sand on a bay that barely moves.
The verdict
- Book ifYou want the softest luxury beach day at the mouth of Boka Bay, actual sand on a coast that mostly offers pebbles and platforms, drinks ordered to the bed by QR code and a seafood dinner at the club’s Rockfish kitchen after the loungers empty
- Skip ifYou flinch at 200 euro for a front row set in August or want the sand into the evening, the beach closes at 20:00 and one July guest found the music turned up far beyond what a quiet afternoon for two can survive
- One thing to knowThe advertised set includes two beds, towels, an umbrella and a welcome drink, but more than one visitor reports the welcome drink never appearing, so ask for it politely as you are shown to the beds

Portonovi Beach Club belongs to the marina village that rose at Kumbor, on the Herceg Novi side of the entrance to Boka Bay, and it trades on the two things this stretch of Montenegro cannot usually give you at once: sand underfoot and water with no swell on it. The official description promises al fresco plates, a bar available for private hire and a beachfront kitchen serving what it calls MediterrAsian cooking under the Rockfish name, and for once the marketing under sells the setting, because the bay here goes glass still on summer mornings and stays clear enough to count pebbles two metres down.
In our Montenegro Coast directory this is the bay day pick alongside Almara at Lustica, while Dukley carries the Budva glamour flag. Portonovi is the one you choose when the point of the day is the water itself and the dinner after it, not the scene.

The bay does the romancing
What you are paying for is the water and the way the club serves it. Boka Bay swallows the swell, so the sea in front of the beds sits turquoise and nearly motionless, and a solo visitor in August 2025 came specifically because sand this soft is scarce in Montenegro, though she noted honestly that the entry underwater still turns rocky in patches. Service is the strong suit on good days: orders go in by QR code from the lounger, water arrives with cups of ice unasked, and a June 2026 couple came back twice in one stay and left naming three staff members in their thanks, which on this coast is rarer than the sand.
The money is where eyes water. Two hundred euro buys the August front row, and the same reviewer who paid it judged the rows behind better value at 85 to 120 euro, since the welcome drink that sweetens the set has a habit of never arriving. The kitchen divides people sharply: a February 2025 guest called Rockfish one of the best meals of their life and named the chef, while the August swimmer found a 25 euro green salad arriving topped with unrequested salmon and priced far above its quality. Our read is that the seafood dinner earns its bill and the daytime beach menu often does not, so eat light on the sand and spend properly at night.
For two people the timing decides everything. In June or September the club is close to perfect, quiet water, room between the beds and golden light down the bay with dinner waiting a hundred metres away. In peak July it can tip the other way: one guest that month found the music overblown and requests to lower it ignored, and a May 2024 couple reported service fading through the late afternoon, a coffee arriving cold after three reminders. Aim midweek, take the third row, and let the bay rather than the speakers set the mood.
Kumbor and the bay beyond
Photo: Sergiy Harini via GoogleThe shore either side of the club belongs to Boka Bay’s inner world, mountains dropping straight to water that behaves more like a lake than the Adriatic. That shelter is why this coast fills our calm water shortlist, and the Montenegro Coast index weighs the bay shores against the open beaches of the Budva riviera further south.
The practical part
The club sits within the Portonovi marina village at Kumbor on the coastal road between Herceg Novi and the Tivat direction, an easy arrival by car or taxi from either side, and boats can come alongside in the marina itself. One June 2026 visitor staying near Tivat called the trip a trek that the day fully justified, which is about right: this is a destination beach day, not a stroll from town.
Booking runs through the club’s phone line, and in high summer the call is not optional if you want the water side rows. Tell us the date, how many of you there are and what the day is for in the form below, and we will contact the club, confirm current set prices and availability, and come back to you with it in writing, free to ask, no strings on it.

Asked before reserving the row
How much is a sunbed at Portonovi Beach Club?
An August 2025 visitor listed the July and August sets at 200 euro for the first row, 150 for the second, 120 for the third and 85 for the rows behind, each covering two sunbeds, towels, an umbrella and a welcome drink. The club publishes no tariff itself, so confirm the rate for your date.
Do you need to book Portonovi Beach Club in advance?
In July and August, yes, especially for the front rows and weekends. Reservations run by phone on +382 68 555 596. June and September are far easier, and the back rows usually have same day space midweek.
Can you have dinner at Portonovi Beach Club?
Yes, and it is the club’s best trick for couples. The beach itself closes at 20:00 but the Rockfish kitchen serves its seafood led MediterrAsian menu until 23:00, so the day can roll from lounger to a proper waterside dinner without moving a hundred metres.
Is the beach at Portonovi sandy?
Yes on the shore, which is a rarity on this pebbly coast, though one swimmer notes the entry underwater still turns rocky in places. The water itself is the draw, clear turquoise and glassy because the bay shelters it from open sea swell.
Is Portonovi Beach Club good for couples?
In June or September, very, with quiet water, spaced beds and dinner steps away. In peak season choose your day carefully: one July guest found the music far too loud and staff unwilling to lower it, so couples chasing calm should aim midweek or off peak.
