The verdict

  • Best forParents who want soft sand, calm shallow water and a short flat walk from the car, with a sunbed, shade and a taverna within reach rather than a steep cove or a moonscape of rock.
  • Top pickProvatas for the gentlest shallow swim with showers and tavernas on the sand, with Firiplaka next door a close and easy second.
  • One thing to knowThe famous Sarakiniko and Papafragas are stunning but hard with little ones, all rock, deep water or a risky path, so keep them as sights and swim on the organised south coast.

Milos is a wonderful island for a family beach holiday, but the beaches that fill the postcards are not always the ones that work with young children. The headline sights, the white moonscape of Sarakiniko and the cliff carved inlet at Papafragas, have the drama everyone photographs, yet they come with deep water, no sand and either a scramble or a risky path down. For an easy day with kids the better bet is the cluster of organised beaches on the sheltered south coast, where the sand is soft, the water is shallow and calm, and a sunbed, a taverna and, at one beach, a shower are a few steps away.

We have ranked these for a real beach day with children, weighing how soft the sand is, how shallow and calm the water, how short the walk from the car and how good the facilities are. The standouts sit on the south coast, with Provatas leading for very shallow water and rare showers and toilets, and Firiplaka and Paliochori close behind for their long sheltered sands. We also flag the famous beauties honestly, glorious to see but hard work with a pushchair and a toddler, so you can plan them as a special outing rather than an everyday swim.

The ranking

Family beaches in Milos

Scored on soft sand, calm shallow water, easy access and facilities. Honest verdicts, the hard ones flagged.

1
South coast

Provatas

The easiest family beach on the island. Soft golden sand shelves gently into calm shallow water, the walk from the car is short and flat, and it is one of the few Milos beaches with showers and toilets, plus a beach bar and tavernas. Small and busy in August, so arrive early.

2
South coast

Firiplaka

A long, broad beach of soft sand below striped volcanic cliffs, with calm shallow water sheltered by the bay and an organised section with sunbeds and a bar. More room than Provatas to spread out, reached by steps from a car park, and easy for almost anyone.

3
South coast

Paliochori

A striking organised beach with warm sand gently heated in places by underwater springs, sunbeds and beachfront tavernas. Children love the soft sand and shallows, though the water deepens quickly in parts, so keep little ones close and swim in the calmer morning.

4
North coast

Plathiena

A sheltered sandy bay near Plaka with clear shallow water and tamarisk trees for natural shade, organised with sunbeds in season. Calm and easy for young children, with good snorkelling at the edges and a fine sunset, though it sits on the north coast so check the wind.

5
South coast

Agia Kyriaki

A long shore of coarse sand and white pebbles with flat parking right behind, fish tavernas and a free stretch shaded by tamarisk trees. Bring water shoes for the pebbly entry and the gentle calm water makes an easy swim, with a boat dock for Kleftiko trips at one end.

6
North coast

Sarakiniko

The famous white moonscape, unforgettable to see and a thrill for confident older children who like to jump from the rocks. But there is no sand, no shade and deep water, so it is a sightseeing and swimming outing for strong swimmers rather than an easy day for toddlers.

The honest read

Who it suits, who should skip

If you want soft sand, calm shallow water and a sunbed within a short flat walk, the organised south coast beaches of Milos are an easy win for families. Provatas, Firiplaka and Paliochori give you gentle, shelving water that lets children wade and paddle, plus sunbeds, a bar or tavernas close by, and Provatas adds the rare comfort of showers and toilets. On the north coast the sheltered bay at Plathiena is a calm, shaded alternative. Bring sun cover and start in the morning, because natural shade is scarce on Milos and the open coast can pick up the Meltemi wind that stirs the sea and chills a small swimmer.

Who should skip what? The famous Sarakiniko and Papafragas are extraordinary to look at, but neither is an easy swim with small children, since Sarakiniko is bare white rock with deep water and Papafragas is a tiny inlet down a risky path. The hidden cove at Tsigrado, reached by ladders and a rope, and the wild beach at Gerontas, reached by boat or a rough walk, are adventures for the sure footed rather than family beaches. See these as outings, save the everyday swim for the sheltered organised bays, and let the wind forecast pick the calmest coast on the day.

Where to book a daybed

All Milos beach clubs

Family days run smoother with a booked base, and on Milos that means an organised beach with hired sunbeds, umbrellas and a taverna or bar rather than a party venue. The serviced stretches at Provatas, Firiplaka, Paliochori and Agia Kyriaki are the easiest places to reserve a front row of beds for the day, with food and, at Provatas, showers a few steps from the sand. Tell us the beach and the dates and we will pass your enquiry to the operator so they can confirm space and any minimum spend, all of which are to be confirmed by season.

Good questions

Before you go

Which Milos beach is best with young children?

Provatas is the easiest, with soft golden sand, calm shallow water that shelves gently, a flat short walk from the car and rare showers and toilets on the sand. Firiplaka next door is a strong second for its long beach and sheltered water, and Plathiena on the north coast is a sheltered shallow bay with tamarisk shade. These organised beaches are the natural base for a family day on Milos.

Are Sarakiniko and Papafragas good for families?

They are stunning but hard work with small children. Sarakiniko is a moonscape of white rock with deep water and no sand or shade, and Papafragas is a tiny cliff inlet reached by a steep risky path. Both are wonderful to see and to photograph, but for an easy swim with toddlers the soft shallow beaches at Provatas, Firiplaka and Plathiena are far less work.

Do Milos family beaches have shade and facilities?

The organised beaches at Provatas, Firiplaka, Paliochori and Agia Kyriaki have sunbeds and umbrellas to hire and tavernas or a bar nearby, and Provatas is unusual on the island for having showers and toilets. Natural shade is limited across Milos, though Plathiena and Agia Kyriaki have tamarisk trees, so bring hats, sun cover and water whichever beach you choose.

Is the sea calm enough for children on Milos?

The sheltered south coast beaches such as Provatas, Firiplaka and Paliochori are usually calm and shelve gently, which suits a careful family swim, while the exposed north coast can pick up the Meltemi wind. Most beaches lack a lifeguard, so swim in the morning when the water is calmest and supervise closely. We describe typical conditions only and never guarantee them.

Which coast of Milos is best for a family beach day?

The south coast is the family base on most days, since beaches like Provatas, Firiplaka, Paliochori and Agia Kyriaki face away from the north wind and stay calmer. The sheltered north coast bay at Plathiena is a good calm choice too. When a strong north wind blows, the south coast is the comfortable place to be, so let the forecast pick your beach.
