This is the quiet, wild, underwater end of the Egyptian Red Sea, a coast built around diving, snorkelling and calm resort bays rather than bars and clubs, and after sunset most of these beaches are dark, silent and beautiful in a way that has nothing to do with a night out. The liveliest resort cluster on the coast, a sheltered horseshoe ringed by big all inclusive hotels whose bars, pool decks and animation teams supply most of the after dark energy here. The scene is in house and family friendly, a show, a band or a themed evening rather than a dance floor, so it suits travellers happy to socialise within a resort. Handsome by day, comfortable by night, and honest about being a resort bay rather than a nightlife district.
Abu Dabbab
A study in why this coast is not a party one. By day the managed turtle bay has a sociable buzz of snorkellers, a cafe and a dive centre, and it is one of the most photogenic shores here, but it is a daytime place that empties and falls quiet by evening. Sharm El Luli
The prettiest sand on the coast and the clearest possible answer to anyone expecting a party, a remote white crescent over a turquoise lagoon with almost no facilities and a long drive south. It is glorious in the late afternoon light and utterly silent after it, which is precisely the appeal for the right traveller. Bring this one for the picture and the peace, and understand that the only sound at night is the sea.
Wadi Lahami
A remote dive and kite camp on a far southern lagoon, where the social life is camp suppers and salt stained conversation under the stars rather than anything resembling nightlife. The atmosphere is wonderful if your idea of an evening is a quiet drink with fellow divers, and bleak if you came to dance. Any of the three gives you the late venues and the beach parties that Marsa Alam simply does not.

Use this coast for a few days of world class diving and snorkelling, the silent wild bays and the marina dinners at Port Ghalib, then move north for the nights out, or fly in and out of Hurghada and split your week.
