Portals Nous, often called Platja Oratori for the little chapel above it, is the small sheltered cove that sits right beside Puerto Portals, one of Mallorca's most glamorous marinas a short drive west of Palma. A neat band of soft golden sand curves inside the cove, where the water stays calm and shallow, framed by a tiny islet and the chapel that gives the beach its name. It is a tidy, well kept family cove with the gloss of the marina right next door.
The appeal here is as much the setting as the sand. Puerto Portals is lined with super yachts, designer boutiques and smart restaurants, so a swim in the morning pairs easily with lunch on the harbour and some of the best people watching on the island. The cove itself has sunbed hire and a relaxed family mood, and a short walk separates the quiet sand from the buzz of the marina.
The honest caveat is that the beach is small and gets busy quickly in summer, and the area around the marina is firmly upmarket, with prices to match once you leave the sand. There is little of the wild scenery of the west coast calas here. For a calm family swim with a glamorous backdrop and an easy lunch, though, Portals Nous is hard to beat close to Palma.
Who it suits: families wanting calm shallow water and couples who enjoy pairing a swim with the marina's restaurants and people watching.
Who should skip it: travellers after a wild scenic cala or a big stretch of sand should head further west along the coast.

Portals Nous questions
Is Portals Nous good for families?
Yes. The cove is sheltered so the water stays calm and shallow near the shore, which suits children, and sunbed hire and cafes are close by. The sand is small, though, so arrive early on a peak summer day for a comfortable spot.
Does Portals Nous have a beach club?
Not a daybed club on the sand itself. The neighbouring Puerto Portals marina is lined with smart restaurants and venues, and the island's beach clubs feature in our Mallorca directory. The cove has simple sunbed hire.
Why is it called Platja Oratori?
After the small Oratori chapel that stands above the cove beside a tiny offshore islet. The two frame the calm sheltered water and give this neat little beach its alternative name alongside Portals Nous.
