The verdict

  • Best for: Families and couples who want Magaluf style sand and shallow water without the nightlife next door.
  • Best spot: Son Maties or Es Carregador, the two main coves, both gently shelving and well served by cafes.
  • Know this: It is deliberately quiet and residential. That is the appeal, but do not expect a party or a glamorous club scene here.

The honest read

Palmanova is what a lot of Magaluf visitors actually want and do not realise until they walk over. It sits immediately west, sharing the same sheltered stretch of the Calvia coast, but the mood is entirely different. Where Magaluf has a nightlife strip, Palmanova has a promenade, family hotels and three small sandy bays that curve one into the next. The water is shallow and forgiving, the sand is soft and groomed, and the loudest sound is usually an ice cream queue.

The three coves, Son Maties, Es Carregador and the smaller central beach, give you choice without much walking. Son Maties tends to be the busiest and best equipped, Es Carregador feels a touch calmer, and the whole front is linked by a flat seafront path that makes it easy with a pushchair or a slow afternoon stroll. It is a domestic, well kept resort beach, and it knows exactly what it is for.

Who it suits is families, couples and anyone who values calm over glamour. Who should skip it is the traveller chasing wild scenery or a buzzing club day, because Palmanova is gentle by design. If you want both quiet sand and a livelier night, the trick many people use is to stay here and walk to Magaluf when they feel like noise.

The club layer

Palmanova is a family promenade rather than a club destination. You will find sunbed concessions, gelato counters and seafront cafes instead of formal daybed clubs. For a structured beach club day, the signature names sit a short drive away and are gathered in our Mallorca beach clubs directory.

Getting there and essentials

Palmanova is around 25 to 30 minutes by car from Palma airport, just west of Magaluf in the Calvia municipality. Regular buses connect it with Palma, Magaluf, Santa Ponsa and the other southwest resorts, and a seasonal coastal boat stops along the bay.

Drivers should aim for the streets and car parks set back from the promenade. Bring water and sun cream, and a parasol or packable umbrella if you want guaranteed shade, since the rented beds go quickly on hot weekends.

Common questions

How is Palmanova different from Magaluf?

They share the same sheltered coast, but Palmanova is the calm, family first version: three soft sandy bays, a flat promenade and almost no nightlife. Many people stay in Palmanova and simply walk to Magaluf when they want a louder evening.

Is Palmanova Beach good for young children?

Yes. The bays are sheltered and shallow with a gentle slope, the sand is soft, and the flat seafront path makes it easy with a pushchair. As always, check the daily lifeguard flags before letting children into the water.

Which of the three Palmanova beaches is best?

Son Maties is the largest and has the most cafes and facilities. Es Carregador is a touch calmer. The small central cove links them. All three are gentle and family friendly, so pick by which is least crowded on the day.

Are there beach clubs at Palmanova?

Not really. Palmanova trades in sunbed concessions and promenade cafes rather than formal clubs. For a daybed club day you head to nearby resorts; our Mallorca beach clubs directory lists the closest signature names.

When should I visit Palmanova Beach?

May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, lighter crowds and far easier parking than peak August. Whatever the month, early mornings give you the calmest, least busy sand.
