Mallorca has a reputation for resort prices, but the island under the sunbeds is generous and largely free. Every beach is public, the wildest stretches sit inside protected areas where nothing can be built, and the only real cost on a natural beach day is a few euros to park and whatever you pack for lunch. The money goes on the loungers and the cocktails, never on the sand.

We have ranked these for the traveller who would rather walk a dune path than queue for a daybed, weighing free access, low cost, quiet, and the wildlife and landscape that make a beach worth the trip. The best of it is on the protected south coast and the undeveloped corners of the northeast, well away from the high rise bays. We have been honest about which beaches reward a slow day and which are simply famous and busy.

If you want one easy pick, drive to Es Trenc, follow the boardwalk through the dunes and spread a towel on the open sand. It is long, wild and free, the closest the island comes to an untouched beach, and it is the Mallorca the resort brochures quietly leave out.

Ranked for value

The best free and budget beaches

Free access, wild sand and quiet first.

01
South

Es Trenc

A long sweep of pale sand and low dunes on the protected south coast, undeveloped, free and backed by salt pans and pine rather than hotels. The water is shallow and clear, the only cost is a small summer car park, and the dunes are fragile, so keep to the boardwalks. The island's standout natural beach.

02
Northeast

Cala Mesquida

A wide bay backed by one of the island's last big dune systems, set in a protected natural area where the development stops well behind the sand. Free to use, often breezy with a little surf, and alive with pine, juniper and seabirds. A wild, low cost day far from the resort strips.

Cala Agulla

A generous arc of golden sand framed by pine woods and protected headland near Cala Ratjada, free and easy with shade among the trees if you walk to the ends. Clear water, a gentle natural setting and space to spread out make it one of the best value beaches in the east.

Playa de Muro

A long, shallow, calm beach on the bay of Alcudia, free along its quieter natural end where the S'Albufera wetland meets the dunes. Soft sand and gentle entry water make it an easy family choice, and away from the hotel section it stays peaceful and cheap.

West

Cala Deia

A small pebble and shingle cove below the Tramuntana terraces, free, rocky and beautiful, with clear deep water for swimming and a couple of simple cliff tavernas. It is tiny and fills fast, so come early or late, but the mountain setting costs nothing and rewards a slow swim.

Formentor

A dramatic pine fringed beach on the wild northern cape, free to use but reached by a road that closes to cars in high summer, when a paid shuttle or boat is the way in. Worth the effort for the clear water and mountain backdrop, but plan the access or you will be turned back.

The honest read

The honest read on doing it cheaply

The beaches famous for the wrong reasons on a budget are Magaluf and Playa de Palma. The sand is free and the deals look cheap, but these are loud, built up party strips with sunbed rows to the waterline, not natural beaches, and the savings vanish once the bars get to work. For the same low cost with dunes and birdsong instead of a sound system, drive to Es Trenc, Cala Mesquida or Cala Agulla and the day changes completely.

The real cost of a wild Mallorca beach is parking and timing, not entry. The protected beaches cap car numbers with a modest summer fee and the spaces go early, so arrive before mid morning or take the local bus, which reaches many beaches for a couple of euros in season. Pack water, a picnic and your own shade, because the natural beaches keep the snack vans to a minimum on purpose.

Tread lightly where it is wild. The dunes at Es Trenc and Cala Mesquida hold the beach together and are slow to recover, so keep to the marked paths, take your litter home, and give the nesting birds and the seagrass a wide berth. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, so check the wind on the exposed northern beaches like Formentor, which can turn choppy fast.

The paid option, if you want it

Browse Mallorca beach clubs

A wild Mallorca beach day needs no club, but the island has a strong club scene around Palma, Portals and the southwest if you want one polished afternoon with a sunbed and a kitchen. We never invent a venue, a minimum spend or an opening status, so anything unconfirmed is marked to be confirmed. Browse the directory, pick your spot, and send one enquiry to check the minimum spend before you go.

We pass your enquiry to the club so they can confirm availability and any minimum spend. Some bookings may earn us a commission at no cost to you. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

Good questions

Before you go

Are beaches in Mallorca free?

Yes, every beach in Mallorca is public and free to walk on and swim from. You pay only for a sunbed, a drink or parking. The wild protected beaches like Es Trenc cost nothing to enjoy beyond a small car park fee in summer.

Which is the best free beach in Mallorca?

Es Trenc, a long undeveloped stretch of pale sand and dunes on the south coast, protected from building and free to lay a towel on. It is the closest Mallorca comes to a wild Caribbean beach and the standout natural pick.

How do I keep a Mallorca beach day cheap?

Skip the resort sunbed rows, choose the protected natural beaches over the built up bays, bring a picnic and water, and arrive early to park near the wilder spots. The local bus reaches many beaches for a few euros in summer.

Which Mallorca beach is best for families on a budget?

Playa de Muro in the north, a long, shallow, calm beach with soft sand, free access and gentle entry water, backed by the S'Albufera wetland. Bring your own shade and lunch and it is an easy, low cost family day.

Is Magaluf worth it for a cheap beach day?

The sand at Magaluf and Playa de Palma is free, but these are loud, built up party strips, not natural beaches. For the same low cost without the crowds head to Es Trenc, Cala Mesquida or Cala Agulla instead.

Do I have to pay to park at the wild beaches?

Some natural beaches like Es Trenc and Cala Mesquida have a paid car park in summer to limit numbers, which is modest. Arrive early for a space, tread lightly on the dunes, and the beach itself stays free.
